How long have you been making music?

There are many musicians/artists on here, and I was curious as to how long everyone has been performing their craft? What is your history? What got you started making music?

For me, I took piano lessons when I was 6, but stopped after a year or so, and I also played in the school band in elementary school for one year and throughout middle school, but I didn't get into electronic music until 7th grade, when my older brother played Fatboy Slim's, "In Heaven" for me.
It was an amazing song, unlike any other music I had heard before. Following this, I proceeded to buy his album Rockafellar Skank, and from then on started listening to different DJ's and producers and have been passionately exploring the world of EDM ever since. I began producing my own music at the age of 14, when a friend introduced me to the Sonic Foundry Acid mixing program (now owned by Sony). I used loop libraries to create my own songs, and besides the panning and volume envelopes I could add, I was very limited so far as equipment. No vstis, no fx of any kind, no soft synths, no way of recording (SOnic Foundry Acid did record, however using only the mic jack on my desktop, recordings were noisy and not very high quality. I had a keyboard, but that was about it as far as sound sources.

Eventually I picked up a pair of turntables on a whim, a couple Gemini belt drive turntables, and started to learn how to DJ. I would eventually upgrade to two Numark direct drives, and would have my first DJ gig on a friend's invitation for my high school's homecoming carnival. After high school, I got more and more into mixing my own tracks and making my own sounds from samples, and DJing, of course. I moved up to Acid PRO, which for the first time allowed me filter automation, which was amazing (I have never come across a filter like acid Pro 4's. It had a 100x setting that would immediately peak, and was very loud, but it sounded awesome. Never have had a filter like the one in Acid PRO 4).

After high school, I went to college for music technology, during which time my music production waned a little. I was working full time, which ate up time (not that I couldn't work on music).

Eventually I would move on to the FL Studio program, recommended by the same friend who introduced me to Sonic Foundry Acid. Then later in school, I would buy a copy of Pro Tools LE so I could work on assignments at home (we were required to use Pro Tools for our projects).

I am now 24, and will be 25 in November.

All in all, I have been producing for about 10 years.

(note: if you do not want to give a life story, the years you have been producing will suffice)

Re: How long have you been making music?

Ive played music since I was 6, started in piano lessons, but in contrast to you, continued with them until I was 18.
Played in a few bands in highschool, didnt do anything with it, but I learned how to write a tune. I was the lowly keyboard player in a metal band with a synthesizer. Kind of shitty really.

In junior year, I picked up FL, wrote a few tracks, ended up moving to ableton.
Im stuck with Live now, but just as an idea kit, Max/MSP is my main software as of late.

Re: How long have you been making music?

Apparently I had a guitar when I was 5 - don't remember that at all (one of the few things I don't remember) My great grandfather would play his cello for us at around the same time. My mother sang, my grandfather was a piano player.

I started "writing" (read singing tunes and words) at about age 14. Most did not make it on to tape as it was 1976/7 (the Summer of Sam). I'd also decided to build myself a guitar - still haven't finished that project (didn't have the skills then, don't have the time now). I moved school four times that year (1977). At the third school I was able to pick up music as a subject, having recently bought a guitar (just gone 33 years now) with money saved from doing a milk run. I struggled initially, but soon got the idea. Moved school again. Started playing bass and drums and cello. Started composing almost exclusively using notation. Huge interest in electronics; built my second and fourth guitar amplifiers. Designed and built the speaker box for the fourth as well. Also designed a new oscillator circuit with a friend (at least we thought it was new, because we couldn't find it in the books -can't remember the schematic now, but I'm sure it's on paper somewhere).

Continued studying music, including classical guitar lessons, and saxophone lessons, eventually taking a degree in composition in 1987. Learnt my craft as a player working with C&W bands, Big Bands, Dixie bands, Rock bands. Started my own Jazz-Rock band in 1983 3 horns + Rhythm and vocals. I've continued to play and write throughout.

Studied programming once in 1983; learnt Fortran and basic. Wrote some elementary programs in algorithmic composition and implemented the results as scores. Introduced to Pro16 and then Pro24 in 1986; given an atari st1040 and pro24 v1.7 and told, "finsih the arrangements for next week, that's when we'll be laying down the tracks." Bought a mega2st and Pro24 (thru to V3) and then Notator thru to V3 also. Hardware synths and ROMplers came along. Taught guitar and bass and theory privately. Ran the recording studios at uni from 1986-1988. Ran the Computer Aided Instruction Lab for Aural and theory training in 1988. Continued composing and playing throughout. Wrote music for theater, radio (jingles and show themes, including an nationally syndicated show), pop, rock, orchestral, pseudo-jazz. Continued studying electronics as well. Did repair work and cable installation. Ran PA's for friends.

Studied software engineering between 1989 and 1997 very part-time. Learnt pascal, cobol, c, smalltalk, modula3 (we wrote a compiler for it) and hyperscript. Lectured in Pascal and Beginning computing, later in Text Media and Computing. Taught myself HTML and allied scripting languages. Ran a technical research group into best practice in web and other emerging technologies in 1995. Continued to play and compose throughout.

Took an education qualification. Started teaching High school music and computing in 1998. Continue to do so though only casually now. Continued my private teaching practice, adding trumpet, trombone, drums and allied strings (banjo, mandolin, etc). Continue to write and play most genres. Worked with more big bands, trios, jazz groups, concert band; conducting orchestra, concert bands and big bands. Still make my own cables as needed. Have built up a considerable amount of equipment and pa gear and handle my own tech work for the most part.

Considering a Masters and then a Doctorate in Composition and Music technology at the moment.

It's a lot but then it has been 33 years

Re: How long have you been making music?

Well for me, I have been playing the piano since I was 8 and I also picked up the alto and the baritone saxophone. I played every instrument till I was about 17, and then quit it all. When I was 20, I got into Djing and I dabbled with FL, Acid (and LSD ), and Sound Forge. I never took it too seriously though. Then about 2 years ago I decided that I wanted to stop DJing and focus on production. DJing wasn't as good of a creative outlet for me. I worked with Logic for a bit and discovered Live and have been using it ever since.

That makes me a newb I suppose

Re: How long have you been making music?

I grew up in a music family. Started with piano at 5 and switched to bass at 8. Got my first computer for music at 8 as well in 1987 and have been hooked ever since. Started making musical ideas that made since around 1990. So i would say around 20 and a half years.

Re: How long have you been making music?

It doesn't really feel that long... I didn't even really start working on electronic music until about half-way through this decade.

I never took lessons or anything either. I was well into my teens when I got my first guitar. It was given to me by a friend and I still have it, and still strum stuff out on it of course, but soon after I got it I learned to read guitar tab and bought a sheet music book of the Cure's Staring at the Sea singles collection and that's how I learned to play it.

Re: How long have you been making music?

i started taking bass guitar lessons when i turned 14. then in my first year in high school i met this crazy goth kid that scared the crap out of me. well long story short we became friends and he showed me the music he was making with software. i got interested in it all and tried to start making my own stuff.

so i guess 6 years

but only the past couple of years is when i really started learning how record properly, mix properly, program synths from scratch, make my own drum sounds and all those other fun things.

Re: How long have you been making music?

I started singing in a punk rock band when I was 17 (1996), we evolved through different genres/formation and names and in 2000 I was still singing but in a grindcore band.

Then by mistake I downloaded The Age Of Dissent by Grey Wolves.
BANG!
Two days later I got my first sampler (Roland Sp-808) and started my power-electronics band with a friend of mine.
I stuck to power-electronics since then, but at the same time I've been experimenting with other more melodic industrial.

2010 I started taking piano lessons and studying a bit of music theory and hey, all of a sudden things start making sense!

I should have studied 20 years ago!

Re: How long have you been making music?

I started music school when I was about 7, playing the recorder and getting into music theory every saturday morning for three years, at 10 I started to play guitar for 2 years until I was bored with it. After that I didn't touch a instrument for 4 years. At 16 I bought myself an electric guitar and a whole new sonic world opened up. I played in some garage bands, from experimental dub to extreme metal... at 18 I bought a Roland DR-5, I wanted to experiment with music on my own in my bedroom, and the DR-5 offered a bit more than just drums. I discovered Scream Tracker but it wasn't until FT2 that I really began to like trackers and did a gig or two with a friend of mine, I got involved with the sceners of pure/TRaxx for a short while. At 25 I then sank in a musical depression. It wasn't until I got around 30 that I started thinking I wanted to do some music again, this time with Buzz. 2 years ago I got hooked on Renoise, and now is now, 36 and still nothing done worthwhile... But I had fun for about 20 years now
