of your own tracks, like some for example will release only mixes, while others of course will release shorter more segmented pieces

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

I wasn't aware people were releasing only mixes of their own tracks. If I were making a dance album I'd probably offer both. If it weren't dance music, I've liked lots of "seamless" albums as well. I don't see it as an either or choice.

If it is dance music only releasing your material pre mixed seems counter productive, however. Unless you have a name already and are trying to keep the individual tracks super exclusive, which is an act of futility in the digital world anyway.

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

Really depends on the context for me. Pure dance music that flows into each section seamlessly, sure yeah just make one big long fuckin mix...if you want songs with titles and maybe even a concept or have lyrics or anything that contains any type of story other than "dance to this shit" then individual tracks.

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

It doesn't matter - you're the artist, make it how it's supposed to sound. Like if you want one long thing that runs together and might have similar themes, great. If you want individual discrete bits of music like traditional songs, great. Or if you want to do both, great - you're the artist.

I think pidgeonholing creativity into stupid little boxes made up by stupid little people that want to make money off your work and never actually made art themselves is a stupid way to make art. Just make good shit, everything else sorts itself out.

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

I agree. Make your mix from all the tracks you produced. I am going to do this once I am proud of enough tracks I produced. As long as your tracks are different enough, it should be a good mix.

You can also do some of your stuff and some other artists tracks. Having this opportunity is a great place to be. Breaking the mold is something I have the greatest respect for.

Do it your way. (burger king)

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

It definitely works if you're doing a concept album. I'm doing just like that right now and all tracks are getting mixed together for a flow and"story-telling" purpose. I'll later split entire mix in pieces and give track titles because I'm not feeling for a single >30min long piece. All these transitions will still exist and it will be easier to navigate through.

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

I used to make mixes of my own work, but I quickly realized that level of self-indulgence is a lot to ask of a potential listener. Honestly, I feel fortunate to borrow 5 minutes of somebody's undivided or semidivided attention, and often times that lies within the context of an entire album. There's so much other shit somebody could be listening to, so I feel grateful for just a song on an album being paid some slight attention.

I'd gladly listen to 60+ minute-long tracks myself, though, so I'm a reverse hypocrite.

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

I'd much rather have individual tracks so that if one track sucks I'm not stuck with it disturbing the flow. And that way I don't have to load the track into my DAW to edit it to cut out the crap. Cherry picking only the best tracks is the way to go for fans. Only the fans can know what they actually like. The artist can't anticipate which tracks people won't like enough to want.

The other advantage of discarding the album format is that then each track can be as loud as possible without trying to make them match a flow of loudness and making some tracks quieter just to match the album. Instead, each track can be it's absolute best.

Re: Mixes vs Tracks

I guess I'm thinking "old media" here but you can make a continuous album that is still cut into tracks so you can skip ahead. Hell, I've got DJ mixes that are cut up into tracks so you can skip from one to the other. Maybe it doesn't work so well on streaming platforms, but it could be done.

I still see offering both as an option. Its only more work to provide both a continuous mix if weren't going to in the first place.
