paying 300$ for a remix, is it worth ?

so one of the bands agreed on remix and said that they do it for 700 but 300 in my case. with promise to expose it as much as possible, "pimp it out"
is it worth a go ?

You should pay for things that you can't do yourself - marketing, mastering, packaging, distribution, promotion, accounting, etc. You can already make music. Why pay someone else to do it for you?

Re: paying 300$ for a remix, is it worth ?

depends what you want really. How much do you need that money, how big is the band, will you be upset if it doesn't get as much exposure as you expected or if the remix is wank.

also why in your case do they give you more than a 50% reduction? Probably cause the original figure never existed and they'd do a remix for 150 no problem they'd just be happy to get paid for what realisticly will be a days work for them

do you really want exposure? Say unexpectedly you suddenly got loads (not gonna happen) do you think your other music is at a level thats gonna be ready to make use of it?

tbh personally ive long since got to the point where I find the whole thing a bit mad and if a label or two that I like dont wanna release my music and push it for me (which they never will) then fuckit I'm not bothered. Sounds easy to say but make music for yourself ha! Nice

On second thought, pay me 300 bucks and I'll remix your song and pimp it out.

Re: paying 300$ for a remix, is it worth ?

Depends man.

In the past i had Daniel Meyer (Haujobb, Architect) remix a tune, he did it for free, in exchange for a remix I did for him the prior year. I've also split the cost of a remixer (Gridlock, Dryft) for a different release.

How bad do you want this remix? Is it going to carry your release/generate some interest?

Paid remixes, happens all the time. I've been paid for doing a handful, its very common.

Yea. I think the two biggest questions are how much mileage are you going to get for your money and is your music up to snuff enough to take advantage of it? (FWIW I don't think mine music is lol)

The fact that this was said

"they do it for 700 but 300 in my case"

Is a YUGE red flag. That's their form on enticement to make you feel speshul so you'll run headlong into their scammy bullshit.

Re: paying 300$ for a remix, is it worth ?

So at the risk of sounding like an out-of-touch old man, what's the allure of having something remixed? Is it to get another take on your material? Is it about exposure and attaching a 'name' to your material? Is it just something the kids are into these days because it's a buzzword or a way to make non-dance stuff into dance music? It just seems like a electronic version of a cover song.

I can sort of kind of see the attraction of the first, the rest don't make much sense to me. I mean I think it might be fun to mess another person's material, but I have enough on my plate that it seems like a waste of time to me. I'd also have to be something I was really into and thought I could make special and my own, so the money couldn't come into it. I'd also be happy to let someone mess with my material if they had interest, but I can't see spending any money for someone else to do it.

Suppose I'm just wondering what all the hubbub's about.

Sincerely,
Out-of-touch Old Man

from artistic stand point, that's pretty much this. except you usually get the actual sounds of the original which you can fuck with in many interesting ways. and just like cover songs can be much better than originals and very different from them, so can be remixes. and no, it doesn't necessarily have to be dancey. there are plenty of experimental remixes of all kinds of music.

as far as marketing, i don't personally have any first hand experience with that, but it would make perfect sense that having someone with a bigger following remix one of your tracks (or vice versa) and share it exposes you to new people who might not hear you or give you a chance otherwise.

Re: paying 300$ for a remix, is it worth ?

clearing it up:
i asked XYZ band (with 40 k followers on fb which is celebrity, considering that harsh ebm is not most popular genre) to remix my song they promised to remix my track and make it popular for 300$, and yes mostly it is about getting your name exposed, with remixes thats how ebm scene works, and as i found out by asking several harsh ebm bands, they charge roughly similar amount of money
just want to consult with you

Fair enough. I guess I just don't see the point of doing remixes instead of collaborations if artists are into each others work and want to make something interesting. It just strikes me as a lazy way to make music, or full on for the commercial aspects, which is just as bad as lazy to me.

I suppose there's some unique middle ground where an artist I don't like remixes another artist I don't like, but I somehow like the product. But mostly I'm going to like either the original artist or the remix artist which means I could just listen to their original output which makes the remix unnecessary. That's just my take on it - obviously it's a popular (and lucrative) past time for people.

I honestly don't have any interest or knowledge of the commercial end of digital music marketing, so I'll just say that seems entirely plausible reasoning.

Re: paying 300$ for a remix, is it worth ?

I guess the ultimate question is - do you have enough of a catalog and identity built up to justify spending $300 to promote it? Is your quality where you want it to be? Will your new potential fans, who are used to the quality of the remixer be impressed with what you bring?

basically a combination of what fmb and chase said.
