Best way to sustain echo/delay

Hi All, I am trying to get that effect where you finish a phrase and there is delay/echo on it but it continues to echo and then you use that delay as part of your build up for a drop or something else. Whats the best way to achieve this? Thanks in advance. Edit: Ah so using the feedback knob works and then raising the volume of the echo effect, but im curious if there are any other methods.

Re: Best way to sustain echo/delay

In your DAW you have complete control of this. Use some volume control.

Re: Best way to sustain echo/delay

Yeah, you generally use the Feedback setting for that as it's what determines the decay time of repetition. In most digital delays a hard 100% is just going to keep going until you stop it (a la sample/hold), so you can use that to just repeat out forever if you like.

You could also record the delay/echo tail and then actually copy/paste it to continue repeating as a separate element. That would offer you a lot more control over it, though it'd be more time consuming than twisting a few knobs.

Re: Best way to sustain echo/delay

I'll also suggest that if you don't know what the knobs and buttons do on your equipment (virtual or otherwise) it's worth looking it up. A quick google or youtube search for 'delay feedback settings' gets you a whole host of explanations.

You don't need to know that the feedback setting originally referred to forcing an electrical signal through a separate circuit to repeated force a new boost in the signal, but you should know that, in the case of Delay:

Time - time between repeats
Feedback - amount of repetitions
Level/Volume - volume of repeats
Mix - wet/dry mix between original signal and the effected one

Knowing all that it's easy to dial in anything from a slapback to freaky space rock. The same goes for stuff like ADSR or phase/flange/chorus effects. While random knob-twisting is fun and great for happy accidents and experimentation, it's not very conducive to quickly getting a specific sound. Putting a little time in learning how stuff works under the hood can often save time in the long run.

Re: Best way to sustain echo/delay

I've seen some delays and reverbs with a freeze button, which continuously repeats the delay until it's disengaged, so then you don't even have to bother with getting feedback set up right, you can just automate the freeze parameter.

Also, check this out.

Re: Best way to sustain echo/delay

Feedback loop.

Put the delay on a send and then route it into itself.

Once you have a nice tail, tweak with the send amount and try not to blow your brains out.

Limiters are for wimps. Redlining and digital clipping is where it's at in 2017!

i like to create an impulse response of both and use those to blend from one to the other by using sound As impulse on sound B. i also like using paulstretch to do extreme stuff. i use it on the tail of a reverb or on an impulse response or whatever works, mix it back in to the track as needed to create the transition.
some reverbs have a freeze function, which is nice, but loads of feedback on a reverb or delay will give you enough to work with.
reverse reverb on the following sound can help merge the two too, in combination with an impulse response from the first sound can often give nice results.
a combination of one or more of the above can work wonders
