Deviation from style?

Hey all,

In my head, I feel like my music has this particular "style" that I've tried to create. Although I don't have a huge following (definitely not, haha), I feel like the people who do enjoy my music like the particular sound that I produce. I've always tried to stick with a particular "sound" in which I make sure that each song still sounds like "Narukami", regardless of genre.

My usual schtick is to infuse a cool, "sloppy" hip hop sound to whatever track I'm working on, usually slower that 112bpm. Currently though, I'm working on a track that's more upbeat; a sort of alt/indie rock track made with synths and computers, that's at about 121bpm.

I guess a part of me is worried that this isn't what people wanted to hear. I also feel like I'm kind of going against my own "style", like I'm no longer creating "Narukami", I'm sure some of you will say "just get over it" but it's kind of just this feeling I have inside.

Idk, I'm mostly just writing this to vent out my feelings. Get this out and hear what others have to say about this.

Re: Deviation from style?

1. go easy, get over it
2. try hard, replicate particular band\style\genre

Re: Deviation from style?

Often I shoot for a particular style, but even when I don't the feedback I get, regardless of genre is "oh yeah, it sounds like you"

I'd not worry about it.

Well, I guess I don't want to jump the shark and make something that's so radically different. The way I see it; it's easy to mess around with other sounds and genres. But to create other genres and retain your "sound", that's a difficult thing to do.

Idk, I'm probably just overthinking this haha

Hmm, that's fair. I probably am overthinking this. My mind's at a weird place atm, at least with my music.

Having worked at music and writing for a long time I now find it difficult to take my personality out of something. Even when trying something far off my typical path I always end up accidnetly making it sound like me.

I guarantee you that nobody really gives a shit if you change styles, not even thousands of diehard soundcloud followers.

Haha, well some bands get flak from their fans because they shifted styles :p But I'm no band with thousands of devoted fans so I probably shouldn't compare haha

Re: Deviation from style?

go with it. your sound can evolve over time, its perfectly fine.
if you are really against pairing the new sound with your name then release it under a different name, but dont hold back on your music because of your brand.

I had an IDM project called c.db.sn for a few years, released a handful of things, a couple of which were signed to a label out of Chicago that was decently popular for the genre, the label and I managed to sell several hundred CD's and the releases sold a surprising amount of digital units.

I recently more or less called it quits for c.db.sn when I began to establish a more industrial sounding project called Cellar Graves and eventually edited the soundcloud page I had up for c.db.sn to be the new project.

to give you the scale I am talking about, c.db.sn has around 1100 page "likes" on FB and the Soundcloud for it has just over 1000 followers.

To my ears the departure in style is a pretty big one, but when I announced on FB that Cellar Graves is the my new focus it was met w positive response. Granted, 1000 people isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but in my little world I had similar concerns to the OP about a change in style. It worked out just fine, I was over thinking things and the response that I received was positive, people seemed glad to have new music from my little world, regardless of a shift in style and the more broad opinion was that the new material still sounded very "me".

I'd say go for it.

Hmm, that's fair. I don't think I'll create a new name just because I want to experiment, unless the new style is incredibly drastically different. But you're right, shouldn't hold myself back so much

Re: Deviation from style?

I have my focussed project, that Cellar Graves thing. All the other stuff I do, ambient music, post-rock, shoegazer stuff, or session work is just credited to my real name.

Whoah, that's totally awesome to hear! Glad it worked out for you man

Alright, this story made me realise I shouldn't worry too much about something most people wouldn't even care about and just try to make good music.

Thanks a lot for sharing, man My mind's feeling much better now

Honestly the internet is so fickle, you are just as likely to loose your fans doing what they love as you are changing up your style a bit.
