Good vocoder?

I recently ran into a need to create some gritty distorted robotic sound and found the vocoders I have to not be up to the task. I am not talking about that funky sound or some Daft Punk crap but something that's decidedly not organic. Any recommendations?

oh... Mac platform compatible. And I tried SugarByte's Robotronic already. Not what I need.

Re: Good vocoder?

For Vocoded passages, I've found IL Vocodex generally to have the best overall sound for it's price point, on the condition that the recording is noise-free and tight (otherwise it's a pain to work with). Would something like the Roland AIRA VT-3 with it's Vocoder option be along the lines of what you are looking for in terms of general sound?

Alternatively, mixing various other plugins to get a similar effect instead of utilising a standalone Vocoder might be a decent alternative. I've used Harmony Engine EVO mixed with Sonitus fx:modulator to get a somewhat convincing 'Vocoded' sound emulated, but the flexibility with using a chain in this instance means I can do much more afterwards for various other vocal passages despite the additional fiddling.

Re: Good vocoder?

I'm trying for sounds along those in the classic Berzerk video game (Humanoid, intruder alert) or the vocals of VNV Nation "Elektronaut". Robotronic or Bitspeek either didn't give me enough of a vocal texture or didn't sound "robotic" enough.

I've considered running things through a bitcrusher, distortion or, as suggested, using a ring modulator.
Harmor is a plugin I'd love to have, but it's Windows only.

Vocalizer Pro from [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

..usually sells for just under $200..on offer at the moment for only $49.99..well worth it, too.

The first video below is a general intro and the second is a more complete walk-through / overview of the program. It's worthwhile watching both in order to understand just what this program does and can do.

I know there are free options out there and I've used a lot of them in the past, but this one really kicks ass and is well worth the spend at the current reduced price.

Oh..and it comes in both Windows and Mac flavors.

Re: Good vocoder?

Hi,

Not that I have used them myself, but both the MMorph and Morph 2 taster videos show them being used to create weird vocal effects by combining two audio sources.

Just a thought
