MOTU 828x wiring

I'm sure there's a MOTU owner or two around.

I'm about to wire up my synths and was perplexed by the manual the 828 has two numbered banks labeled as input and output. The way the wiring example is printed would suggest that the lower row is all inputs, which is inconsistent with how they're labeled.

Do I simply hook up L and R lines coming from the synth into input slots 1 and 2 (... and so on for additional units)?

And an FX pedal... do I connect out lines from 828 to FX and from there into two consecutive input lines on the 828?

The lines then get assigned somewhere when setting up the unit?

Re: MOTU 828x wiring

looking at the back, the left ones are inputs and the right ones are outputs.

you can set up the sends to do FX but i prefer to just use a pair of ins and outs for routing fx.

Re: MOTU 828x wiring

they probably failed to update the manual to the new HW config, the old one 828hybrid has outs on the top and the ins on the bottom.

Re: MOTU 828x wiring

That makes sense.

I'm going to turn on the whole thing tonight. Was missing some cables.

How does the assigning of the stereo pairs work?

Re: MOTU 828x wiring

thats DAW dependent.

just remember that the outputs cannot be re-named in some DAW's, for example I use Live, and the Main outs on the XLR are alway 1 and 2, and I dont use them, i go 1/4 inch to my monitors, so my Main outs in Ableton have to be 3 and 4. It's a little confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it.

However, it is annoying once you end up using the Analog and moving onto the ADAT outs, its like... is this 13/14 or 11/12????

Yea. These days most XLR are combi jacks. XLR or quarter inch.

Re: MOTU 828x wiring

I use the main outs with xlr
The cue mix fx is pretty cool! I was using compression on the drums on the main outs of my mpc, it sounds pretty good. I want to look into the iPad app for controlling it. It's some kind of lemur thing I don't have any idea about.
Oh make sure you get the latest drivers and use the Thunderbolt if that's the one you got much better performance! Even with the buffer set to max in live I can still play in stuff from my hardware with out sounding like a crazy delay.

I came across Lemur, but was puzzled what it was good for. Thanks for letting me know. I was hoping that the iPad could be used to control it. I still have to RTFM

Re: MOTU 828x wiring

I can't figure out how to set up two audio output channels to feed into my effects pedal so I can side-chain desired inputs to the Strymon. It says on the MOTU website to select any two empty out and in slots to route the signal, but nowhere does it say how to set up the audio routing. Does anyone have an idea?

----- solved ----

I RTFM and finally saw there are 8 different busses. Set up bus 2 to route output to desired out stereo pair used as input for external FX, set FX to 100% wet, use mixer IN setting to dial in desired amount from analog input stereo pair the FX is plugged into to adjust wet signal in main out bus.

The cuemix fx seems pretty neat. Gotta look into controlling via iPad. Compression and EQ in the interface, how cool is that? I'll get me a Timeline pedal and I'll almost be all set OTB.

Re: MOTU 828x wiring

Reviving and old thread cuz I don't feel like starting a new one.
Am I missing something simple? Why can't I find a main output volume control on the 828? 2 headphone out level controls but no main out? I MUST be wrong!

The top rotary controls the main out. Looks like it has a headphone symbol, but it controls the main.
