Laptop's sound quiet after unplugging external sound card

The sound on my laptop has become much quieter after having done some recording this weekend with my focusrite saffire 6 USB external soundcard. I am not using the soundcard at the moment but the volume is much quieter when using the laptop's onboard soundcard, even when the volume is turned right up!

Can anybody help me?

Re: Laptop's sound quiet after unplugging external sound card

Are you plugging in/ unplugging the interface? Maybe that is causing a volume setting to be reset somewhere?

Also, to be clear, the Focusrite is now quieter after having recorded? Or is it the internal soundcard? Either way I would say it is almost certainly a settings issue caused by plugging/unplugging the Focursite. I'd be surprised if one recording session suddenly damaged your interface.

Hi - thanks for your reply, yes it's the internal soundcard on the laptop.

Re: Laptop's sound quiet after unplugging external sound card

That is a bit mind boggling. It almost certainly has to be some buried system setting that changed when you aren't using the Focusrite. I don't see how the Focusrite could have psychically harmed the onboard sound card. Were you hot swaping the Focursrite? I never do that with audio interfaces. Only plug/unplug them when the computer is turned off!

Maybe try reinstalling the drivers for the onboard soundcard or resetting to default?

No no no...it will never be as loud as your external interface, in part because it's a cheap pos.

This, this, this. Especially if you're using Windows 10. I've had MyCrowSoft search and find shitty drivers for things that I already had the proper driver for, stock sound included.

This is assuming 'laptop' doesn't mean MacTop

Re: Laptop's sound quiet after unplugging external sound card

Thanks guys. I think it was a driver issue - I uninstalled the driver and that seemed to fix the problem
