effects?

what effects sound good on drums in ableton live 9? I want to have a mellow reverberated sound that doesn't sound so straightforward...usually the drums I use sound like the main part of my songs

Re: effects?

I hate to be a dick (actually, I secretly love it), but you ask the worst questions I've ever seen anybody ask ever. Maybe you should start with some EQ and compression and see where it goes.

If you want reverb, just use reverb.

Re: effects?

My suggestion, seeing as you appear to be absolutely new to DAWs, is to look up a super basic definition of each basic FX unit you've got in Ableton and maybe a super basic tutorial on how to use such an FX unit...then decide for yourself what might sound good.

If you have to ask what kind of FX unit to use to get reverberated drums...it is rather a show stopper my man...

All the effects at your disposal are 'good'. Otherwise, they wouldn't be there. Learn about HOW to use them to maximize the potential of your sounds. It's literally that simple / vast.

Re: effects?

I wouldn't since the kik is of low frequency and it will create muddy sound in the low end. I don't do it, then again depends on what genre, I just add compression and eq for getting the top kik ( for intros etc)

Re: effects?

Mellow kick? Add some amplitude envelope attack (attack time).
You want reverb? Add reverb.

Generally I answer the question you asked in your OP by dragging and dropping the effects onto some drum tracks.

I don't really know you so I don't know which effects you think will sound good on drums. Personally, I like to use saturators / distortion. I really love adding wide band noise to shit. For kicks I'm a big fan of high q, low pass filters. For high hats I like but rushers and retriggers / buffers / some kind of thing that fucks shit up so that an off beat quarter note hat sounds like a break eat in my pants.

Generally I like everything to sound really shitty and low tech, then I hate the fuck out of everything until it sounds all clean and high tech. But that's just me. I don't know if that's going to float your boat... But you're welcome to try it.

Oh, and compression. But you'll probably fuck it up. Most people do. So I'd recommend trying everything else first.

On drums? Really? I've always found that EQ'ing drums is a sure fire way to instantly ruin your mix.

With EQ: thin, apathetic drums with no bass = no names on the guest list.
Without EQ: fat, thumping bass in the kick and sick cunt hisses in the snares = instant ball drop.

Uh, no dude. OBVIOSULY the best overtones come from cranking your EQ into the fucking ceiling, so when your sick bass rumbles the foundatons of the fucking building apart there's something there to fuckin hold it up yeeeeeeeeee

my motto is crank the eq = your shits on fleek [100 emoji] [100 emoji] [100 emoji] [100 emoji] [100 emoji] [100 emoji] [100 emoji] [100 emoji]

Re: effects?

EQ everything, if you want sparse EQ alot.

Make layers.

Reverb and EQ differently. highs can have spacey long tail for example. Lows short room dryer reverb

Go hard on effects to get an effect you want on each layer then tone it down.

Mix layers in one channel for further process / mix with mix.
