Hey guys, I have grown moderately annoyed about plugging and unplugging 2 usb hubs + HDMI + Magsafe to my MBP everytime I want to get into workstation mode. I have been looking at a thunderbolt dock that would allow me to essentially use just one cable (and the charger) to hook all my shit up, i.e. external harddrive, midi controllers, audio interface etc. I've done plenty of research on the subject and have convinced myself that this will be a good move. Though, I have not found too much info on a similar set up in regards to musicians/producer set ups; more so video editors. Long story short... I was wondering if any of you guys use a thunderbolt dock to connect your screens, audio interfaces, hard drives etc. and if so, how do you like it?
I don't think I'm whining. I'm worried I'm putting a lot of wear and tear on my ports unnecessarily. I feel you on where you are coming from, though. I've noticed that lately some of my devices disconnect and reconnect every half hour or so and this didn't use to happen. I feel that in the long run, having a device that has software to safely disconnect all my devices at once while only using one cable will help protect my external gear and my laptop. I feel you on using the money elsewhere. As far as it being more convenient i.e. improving my life by removing the stress of harming my equipment, the cost isn't worrisome to me. I'm more interested if other people using similar set ups have run into any problems.
Thought I would come back and put in my feedback after having the Thunderbolt dock for a few days. I have really been enjoying it. I have run into no device drops or weird glitches. All my audio devices, controllers, and external hard drives have been working perfectly. It made my desk a lot cleaner looking too. Now I only have one loose cord coming up to my laptop.
