Some direction for techno newbie

Hi forum,

I recently (re)discovered electronic music, after years of listening to rock and metal. But I'm pretty lost genre-wise, so I could use some help identifying what exactly I like about techno and EDM in general.

I found this mix some time ago and I like everything about it:
youtube.com/watch?v=N7DEv-QP_Zk
The guy himself labels it "tech progressive house" but using those terms doesn't really land me something similar. So here's a quick rundown of what I enjoy:

- tight, clean, minimal sound
- with the occasional simple melody, though
- a deep, monotone bass and "breathing" groove
- unintelligible sampled voices
- absolutely no singing or other poppy elements
- warm, analog synths (Aphex Twin-esque)
- mesmerizing and dark atmosphere
(I guess the kind of music one gets easily lost in when taking stimulants...)

Here's a set of a Dutch DJ that I really enjoy, I guess this has a few more house / acid influences.

Minimal techno is quite close, I guess, but there's so much minimal techno out there that I DON'T like. That's just too much of a drone and lacks dynamics. So if anyone has recommendations in terms of artists, labels, or (sub)genres, do tell!

Re: Some direction for techno newbie

Welcome.

Check out recent Boiler Room mixes.

For starters: Luke Slater/Planetary Assault System http://soundcloud.com/platform/plane...ssault-systems

Also DJ Hell has some nice minimal sounds, but he can easily go down the Tech House road with ample, but restrained vocals http://soundcloud.com/djhellofficial...l-goethebunker

Of course, Richie Hawtin must be named: http://soundcloud.com/sstraykitten/r...in-boiler-room

Coming from Metal, check out something a bit more industrial: http://soundcloud.com/haxxan-1/ancie...-berlin-dj-set

http://soundcloud.com/electronic-bea...usive-mix-2015

For me the latter two qualify as dark and mesmerizing - and no vocals. AnD also has nothing but percussion for the major part of the set.
Enjoy,

Andy

Thanks a lot.

At a first glance, DJ Hell is a winner.

Re: Some direction for techno newbie

If you want stuff like the first video you posted, search around for tech house. You'll probably find stuff that's not even close to what you want, because people tend to miss label things... but it's the term you'll have the highest chance. Try Laurent Garnier, Marc Romboy, Stephan Bodzin...
If you want to go more techno-ish and darker, look out for artists on the Drumcode label.
To discover more artists, check out some Boiler Rooms like liquid_air said. Also check out be-at.tv, they live stream some of the best festivals in the world and have many stuff recorded, you'll find many artists you'll like there.
