Is EDM modern trance/house?

10 years ago there was no genre called EDM. I listen to EDM now and it sounds as if just a current version of trance and or house music but with more pop arrangements ala Zedd. Speaking of Zedd, what do you people think of his album "Clarity"? I like it. One of the best "newer" CDs I bought in the past few years.

Re: is EDM modern trance/house?

EDM is more of a marketing term than a specific genre. It's just a label that is used currently to promote a certain section of the music industry, doesn't mean much more than that.

Re: is EDM modern trance/house?

I agree that yeah, it often sounds kinda trancey and housey. I'm not really into them because the rhythms are too simplistic often. I need syncopation and variety like i need air.

Yes. However, electronic music (particularly of the dance variety) kinds of needs labels given the format in which it is presented.

If I were to potificate about it, I would say that they emerge out of necessity. Music that is dj-ed, and how the art form has evolved where tracks are expected to blend into each other, requires some kind of label so you do not have to listen to 8 hours of bollox that you do not want to, and so a dj does not have to listen to thousands of disco house while looking to buy nasty experimental IDM.

Just pontificating, don't mind me. ;-)

That is still market-driven classification IMO.

What I'm getting at is that genres are just classifications to facilitate marketing and that's it. They literally serve almost no other function. In fact, I'd even argue that "genre" is even more of a marketing driven concept in electronic music than any other genre. Like, I've never ever heard people get into arguments over the nuances of the sub-sub-genres of rock n' roll. In fact, they really don't even exist. Some of the terms developed organically, but they've mostly been created by journalists (to sell copy) and adopted by marketing teams (to sell music and events).

As a fan of electronic music surrounded by people who mostly don't like it, when it comes up in conversation that "I like electronic music" I don't go past that, I just let them borrow some albums from me if they want to know more.

We are really saying the same thing, but my tl:dr point is that genre = marketing 100% We don't really need them to talk about music as social creatures, the only people that really use them are people that like to nerd the fuck out and be pedantic. Casual music conversations don't require tons of genre classification.

Absolutely fair enough, especially in this modern world. I also think you are right about it being more over the top with electronic music, although with the little familiarity I have with it heavy-metal puts in a good effort.

I have to admit, I have always had a bit of a love-hate relationship for genres. I like to nerd out on them in the way an art historian thinks about how politics, social changes, etc. influenced art movements. Also as a musician, they become a form of short-hand for emotional states ("I want to bring in some of the early UK hardcore energy to this house track"). That said, I completely agree with you re: the marketing -- it can be hideous and lead to pedantic idiocy. Furthermore, these days it seems that no sooner has a new and interesting musical idea developed, than it becomes basically still born by the media pile-on, and then subsequent producer pile-on.

If we take a step back though and look at it more through an anthropological set of glasses, I wonder how much genres can be related to the way in which more traditional societies different types of dances and music develop?

In more traditional societies, even western ones, types of rhythms and songs have names which have their own uses, their own segments of society that play/listen to them (ex. music for rights of passage for men vs whole community wedding music, drinking songs, war marches etc.) and ideas about what they mean.

When I first started listening to electronic dance music (back in my day... ), and when genres were a I think a little more fluid (e.g. you could go to a 3 room disco-house, trance, and drum & bass party with a chillout room playing trip-hop and ambient), I was fascinated by the way in one event could have these colliding aesthetics / psychology / fashions / beliefs / and so on. At the time it really seemed like a peaceful meeting of some really weird tribes... Certainly built through marketing to a degree, but socially interesting none-the-less. I am not sure whether this kind of thing occurs much anymore.

Re: Is EDM modern trance/house?

Five minutes ago there was no genre known as edm.

One hundred thousand billion years ago the genre known as edm emerged from the formless primordial Šther, both creating and destroying itself.

Re: Is EDM modern trance/house?

The progression of electronic music in general has swayed a lot. There is a lot more of a pop sound to EDM music than there was in my opinion. Love some of the new stuff, but you cant beat old hardstyle songs by Showtek etc!
