Getting over writer's block?

Alright. I've been producing everyday for a little while, yet for the past 3 months now, I haven't been able to come up with anything good. What's the deal? What do I do about it?

Re: Getting over writers block?

Do you pretty much sit down and go through a fairly identical process each time going after really niche sounds inside a really specific genre?

...yes, basically. open massive, make a sound, open izotope trash 2, make sound more complex, realize it all sounds like shit because idk how to sound design after a few repeats of that. then just give up and download gigabytes of massive presets, which all sound like excision and datsik ripoffs. i have been kinda thinking that is why i can't come up with anything good.

Yea. That would probably be your issue.

Also, just try writing music instead of worrying about making dubstep.

it's not about me shooting for dubstep. it's that i want all my music to have heavy ass modulated bass. that simple.

Re: Getting over writers block?

I hesitate to suggest watching more youtube videos on making modulated bass patches...there is a good one by thedjdistance where he uses massive...gives you a basic starting point then you can go from there...

I'll also hazard another thought here and say that making the modulated basslines isn't as much an issue as making them work well in a track...so concentrating on song writing while polishing your sound design skills is probably a good idea as well

Also, isn't Trash 2 distortion? I'd concentrate more on FX that create movement, chorus, flanger, delay, stereo FX, pitch shifting, filter modulation...

I think relic's point was to try forgetting about sound design sometimes and instead try writing a song.

Re: Getting over writers block?

I appreciate it relic. You've brought me a lot of insight. Although, part of what I'm trying to do is to sound design myself so that I can escape the unoriginality stereotype I feel like most people who aim at dubstep style music go for from day 1. I know how to use massive very efficiently, but now after these insights, I feel like my problem is that I don't know anything about adding effects in general on a proficient level. Think one of you guys can link me to a good tutorial or guide on how to add effects in general?

Edit: I've been looking for a tutorial in adding all kinds of effects in a very broad and general manner. I've been meaning to post somewhere on here asking about it actually haha

Re: Getting over writers block?

You want to make your own unique style of dubstep? Think of different approaches to the song structure/arrangement/time signature/speed. Not just sound design.

I wanted to make slightly different house. So I made tracks in 3/4 time with arrangements that are not so obvious/easy to follow. The kick drum loop just restarted but the bassline loop has another bar or 2 to go. The hihat is in a different time signature of its own and the one-off sound fx don't seem to follow a particular predictable pattern, they just occur randomly. Nothing massively stand-out-ish, but just subtle different approaches.

Experiment, do something 'wrong', etc. Getting over writer's block is easier than you'd think.

Re: Getting over writers block?

I might just look up some basic definitions of what all the typical FXs are actually doing, read manuals to understand what the parameters do. There might be a basic guide somewhere, but I'm honestly not sure where to direct you.

If you really want to do something different, tutorials aren't going to be much use. You ought to really experiment a lot. Also, I wouldn't jump straight to a distortion unit. But that is just me.

Re: Getting over writer's block?

When I get writers block I normally start with something I kinda know how to do properly.
Either I start making a drum pattern or make a pad.
Then I write some chords that sound good. And if I'm not able to keep working on it I throw it all away and does something else.
Then I try again the day after

I also think you should focus on the song writing and do the sound design later. I also have this problem sometimes and I like to just start with something random (not completely random, something that sounds good ofc. ) and then everything starts to fall in place

Re: Getting over writer's block?

On your daw in your piano roll, just create a whole bunch of notes and play around from there.
You most likely wont use it as a melody but the rhythms and note progressions can help create a general feel and sound in your head which can act as a starter

Re: Getting over writer's block?

Trying switching up you're process to keep it fresh and interesting. Start with a sample or a drum pattern to create the mood bc its much easier to design sounds when u have layers down already. That way you can get a general idea of what kind of sound is going to fit the sample. Starting off with a baseline is the hardest way to start imo because that is the most determinant factor of a tracks mood and pulse, but at the same time the least melodic and rhythmically varied. Its easier, more free and more inspiring to start with chords, a sample, or a melody because there are no restrictions.

It can also be limiting to set out to make a certain genre or mood before you even have anything down. Ive found its easiest to be creative when your mind is empty. When you embrace the void, the inspiration fills the void.

Most importantly, remember in the end life is about the journeys not the goals so when you're producing just try to zone out and appreciate the feeling you get producing and the dope beats will follow, trust me we've all been there and back.

If that still doesn't work try stepping away from producing for a week or so completely. Explore, do new things, enjoy nature, or explore art forms other than music. The most important thing is to probably not worry about the writers block and just doing that will make it do away. Writers block is just a vicious cycle of thinking too much about inspiration. Let the inspiration flow!

Maybe its not the porn itself. Maybe it is generally having an orgasm? I do not see how merely just being horny would understimulate anyone.
