Does anyone have any clue what this could be? Akai has been no help and google ain't doin the trick either please help! I don't want to have to break this thing of in my OWN ass!

Re: MPK25 midi messages going off random

its strange because it does this when it wants to, its not automation that i know. It seems to happen more when i first load up ableton live seems like when i let it sit for a bit it does it less and less.

Re: MPK25 midi messages going off random

I have a similar problem with my MPK49.

Is it the same control or different ones? You can tell this by looking at the LCD display, you should see a number eg: CC22 and a value (0-127), or open the MIDI assign dialog in Live. If it's the same control then it's most likely a problem with the pot.

I've got one that sends control changes at random. I've deactivated it until I can get it replaced.

^^^ If that doesn't work download & install [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
. Close Live and use midi-ox to monitor the input from the MPK to see if it's still spitting out midi outside of Live & which midi value it is.

Probably a dusty circuit contact. I had the same with my Maschine MK1.

If you know how to open it then clean it. Should work again.

Re: MPK25 midi messages going off random

Don't you guys have issues with the pads' sensitivity? I had to open it and add some thickness under each pad in order to be more responsive, but now i feel they are all unbalanced, sensitivity wise.

Another thing i noticed, when i assign any of the knobs to a an ableton or vst parameter, it takes a while to accept it: i have to rotate the knobs until they get it.
Curious to know your opinions

Re: MPK25 midi messages going off random

Update on my last post.

This is a hardware problem. There is no software / firmware fix.

The only workaround I've found is to open the Vyzex editing software, create a new default bank and edit the faulty controls to have a minimum and maximum of 0 and then save to the keyboard.

However, this doesn't guarantee that those controls will stop firing. It just means that they'll be shooting zeros. This may still be picked up by your DAW, so may interfere with any attempts to assign control maps.

If your keyboard is still in warranty, go and make a claim and have it replaced ASAP.

If it's out of warranty, you'll need to replace the top right PCB board.

It's pretty easy to replace, so long as you keep grounded and be careful.

But yeah, those are your only options.

Re: MPK25 midi messages going off random

Had a similar problem with my MPK25 where the pitch wheel would send random messages, so I bypassed it completely. I rarely use it anyways. Point being, not all components in the MPK25 will hold up to the test of time and the same might be true for the knobs.

Try using a threshold for the messages on the problematic ones.

Is that a pre or post Brexit quid? The best price I could find was USD $150 (that's about 120 quid today) to purchase a secondhand replacement.

Your advice isn't very thoughtful. You're suggesting replacing a device which has a known production defect with a secondhand option which most likely has the same production defect.

Great idea bro!

I think it's better to spend a little bit less than that (USD $125 ~ 95 quid) to get a replacement part that should work and is covered by warranty. Like I said, it's pretty easy to install. Shouldn't take more than twenty minutes and then you won't have any controller problems again.

If it's a known manufacturing fault then he should just send it back to Akai for repair or replacement.

These things are basically disposable pos.

His pos broke, time to check the warranty and replace it one way or the other, unless of course he's into electronics, in which case I'm guessing the guy would have probably just fixed it himself instead of asking you if and how he should fix it.

But yeah, alternatively, order a new board, find an electronics specialist, send the parts and keyboard to him, wait a week for turnaround and pay for postage and labour if you prefer, no skin off my nose.

I think you are confusing the MPK25 Mini with the MPK25. The bigger ones (which I believe OP has, although not sure) are a fair bit more expensive.

I'm sitting here wondering what the fuck you are on about with all of the "piece of shit" this and "piece of shit" that. Honestly I thought you'd lost the plot or something... Then I realised!

You're talking about the MPK Mini. We're all talking about the MPK25.

This is a piece of shit:
This is one of the best traditional MIDI controllers you could buy, once you get over the easily fixable manufacturing defects with a bit of DIY:

It's also four times the size of the MPK mini.

Just buy the board and install it yourself. All you need is a Philips head.

Although the specific board I linked to is for the larger models (MPK49-88)

If you visit that site you should be able to find the board specific to the MPK25 and it will probably be a bit cheaper too... Literally all that site does is ship boards for Akai gear.

I was going to say... those secondhand prices you mentioned were ludicrous. I'd buy an MPK25 used for that price... and I'm philosophically opposed to secondhand control surfaces...

Re: MPK25 midi messages going off random

All good. After searching for those keyboard images today I realised that the board I recommended is wrong for this model anyway.

Did a bit more research and you can just buy rotary encoder pots and replace them individually for $7.00 a piece:

Not sure if they'd need soldering or not. But again, it wouldn't cost too much to take the parts into a shop and get them to put them in for cheap..
