specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

hi all

I’m looking for listening suggestions within a very specific “atmosphere” within the electronica musical genre. Your track suggestions are supposed to be played in a radio program about downtempo/downbeat/krautrock/trip hop/glitch/slow techno music. The atmosphere I’m looking for is hard to describe, but I will give a list of exemplary tracks below or if you wanna discover some new artists yourself, just google “beetje melk” plus “mixcloud” to stream the show and get a better idea of which sound I’m looking for (or mail me for the full tracklist of all shows). It shouldn't be ambient as it shouldn't fade to the background completely. I need a bit more melody and/or rhythm. I’m looking for the very best of tracks, not albums (too much work to go through complete albums). Also, please only post tracks that you think are very good, I check to much average stuff on a regular basis already . Looking forward to check some new stuff!

Thx in advance!

Re: specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

listening to your mix at the moment. It's nice, I couldn't believe you had some Dictaphone in your tracklist, not many people know about them.

Here are a few suggestions :
Rumpistol's Rumpistol - the whole album is really good but I guess Morgenfugl, Gargamel & Cholic are the "hits"
Lusine ICL - try to have a listen to records "Iron City" and "Serial Hodgepodge". Tracks suggested : Scheming, Auto Pilot
Lukid - more on the instrumental hip-hop side, but I noticed you had some nosaj thing, sixtoo and damu the fudgemunk and I think it would fit nice in between there. Tracks : Western Swing, Fall Apart
I saw nothing related to Jan Jelinek but if you're looking for ambient techno, it would be a really nice place to look into. Under the moniker "Farben", track Silikon is good, and under "Gramm", the track named Legend/Nugroove is the "kickiest"
have you ever listened to four tet's side project Fridge ? I only really now their "Eph:reissue" album which has a nice blend of instruments and electronics. Check out Kinoshita and Of
does Deru fit in ? Pushing Air and Trying to Remember are good ambient electronica records. Maybe some of it is a bit too "dark" though, you decide. Try tracks Echoes of Me and Noru

Re: specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

hi Toivo

I checked out Davwuh. Very cool sound and more or less exactly what I was looking for. Enough structure in the rythm and melody to be relaxing, a bit dark at times. Cool. Never heard of future garage, so if there is more like this, I will find it. Thx!

Re: specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

hi Lug

I gave your suggestions a quick listen. So probably I didn't fully learned to appreciate the genius of some artists yet, but so far I think most of them are really good. For the radioshow, I think Lusine ICL with Scheming and Lukid with Fall Apart are the top tracks. I also liked some of Fridge's and Gramm's work and Deru sounds promising too. I will dig into those . Thx, also for the specific track listing per artist! And I'm definitely into dark tinted music.

Re: specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

future garage is people making music in the style of UK garage with modern techniques ; basically massively related to Burial's work.

If you haven't heard of Burial before, you could definitely check it out. I really don't know what tracks to recommend but You Hurt Me and Gutted are probably the best introduction I can think of (other gems to find on that first self-titled album).

kinda in the same genre, Nocow has some cool tracks too. This one :

and this from Scuba :

Re: specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

hi

I think this will be the tracklist for the next radioshow:

1.Alva Noto - Argonaut (For Heiner Müller) (7:35)
2.Xploding Plastix - Cashmere Tarmac (4:19)
3.Pye Corner Audio - Dystopian Vector Part One (5:56)
4.Onra - Gotta Go (1:43)
5.Onra - Words Of Encouragement (1:48)
6.Onra - Mai's Theme 2 (1:40)
7.Onra - The Vallee Of Love (2:07)
8.Deru - You Haunt Me (5:31)
9.Davwuh - Still In Hong Kong (6:32)
10.Lukid - Fall Apart (4:57)
11.Lusine Icl - Scheming (6:20)
12.fridge - lo fat diet (6:37)

Sweet, happy and mellow episode this time.

So thanks Lug (and Toivo), for providing half of the tracks! In the end I didn't like Farben/Gramm/Jan Jelinek to much and also Rumpistol was missing something for me. But amazing list of suggestions.

Yes, I do know Burial, but I like his alter ego, Four Tet, way better. Nocow and Scuba are also pretty good tracks.

You do not, maybe, know tracks related to Shackleton - Blood on my hands, Regis - Blood Witness, Pinch - Qawwali ? Next episode should be dark.

Re: specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

cheers ! I'm glad you found something of interest in there. I understand that Jan Jelinek was a bit different from the downtempo stuff you were looking for.
I know Pinch and like it a lot, although to me it's definitely not in the same category as the rest of the stuff we were sharing. Really digging that darker direction you're thinking of, though. I'll try to think of stuff to suggest.

I see a lot of Onra's Chinoiseries in that playlist, good choice here, I really like these tracks from him

Re: specific downtempo/ambient techno/electronica suggestions

Ow, I now read that Burial is not this Hebden guy because of your "lol". Back in de the day I read some "convincing" story they were the same person. Even beter if they are not the same person. I was a bit disappointed honestly, when I thought about Four Tet making the music Burial does :p (except Etched Headplate maybe). I'm offending the masses here probably .

I do not know much of Pinch's work, but yes, as far as I'm familiar with his music, it doesn't quite match the level of some stuff mentioned before.

So you knew Onra. I was never on these kind of fora before, but I never met anyone irl who knows like 1/10 of the artists I like. You should do a radioshow .

off the top of my head, maybe I'll be completely missing the point, please tell me if I do

related to Regis, I think a lot of the ambient/deep techno released on Stroboscopic Artefacts would fit. Check out Dadub ; two tracks I can really recommend are Moksha and Existence
Also, in that sort of ambient techno style, I remember listening to Monolake's Momentum and really enjoying tracks Cern and Excentric

For Shackleton and Pinch, to me it's related to a deep dubstep vibe so maybe you could check these out :
Pangaea's Router / You & I LP is really really great, kind of garagey
2562 has some very interesting tracks. Flashback is really an all-time favorite of mine and Desert Lament or Jerash Hewerken from his latest lp are also digging deep.
then there's wAgAwAgA, which has released some very diverse stuff but his album mrepsican is really inevitable to me. Momowamo probably my favorite track
