I've found in the past few years, as dubstep has become the new music to listen to, that it has made an impact on trance music. Trance music used to be melodic, moving, uplifting, and now it is all about the dirty bassline. For example, I listen to 'A State of Trance' weekly podcast by Armin Van Buuren, and all the songs he plays have a dirty bass in them - nothing is uplifting anymore and it bothers me. Sure, the lyrics and the melody might be nice, but the song itself isn't as much about the epic lead synth and the uplifting pads. What the Hell happened to trance music? Fuuu dubstep... I like dubstep, but it ruined dance music, it ruined trance!
I'm sure there are still producers making good trance and DJs spinning good trance. I think your first problem is that Armin van Buuren is under some pressure to spin what people like or his career could take a nose dive.
I used to dig on some uplifting trance back in the day. If Astral Projection are still around making music and DJing, I highly recommend you check them out.
no musicians seem to care about any music except the genre they make, and the artists that are popular in it..
normal people don't usually categorize everything they listen to..they like 'prodigy' or 'paul van dyk' (replace with artists that you listen to if that helps)..except dubstep, because it is highly commercial and trendy at the moment..
I thought trance went to total shit back in the late 90s / 2002.. Darude - Sandstorm is a good example of this..
