Re: AEP & ISAT Present: Jazzyspoon - Competition in the Mutation of Sound

interesting to get MIDI. I only EVER give audio stems due to the fact that i process everything in the audio domain pretty hard.

I've had remixers ask for MIDI, when I explain this its usually met w some frustration. Sorry, but midi to a pad isn't going to be the same thing as a bounced audiofile of that pad/whatever that has been paulstretched, chopped, looped in a sampler and playedback with forwards/backwards looping.

but i guess thats just my process.

Midi and sampling are two totally different things, though, and shouldn't really be compared. You can do anything you want with midi, not just stick a pad over it. You could take your mangled audiofile and stick it back on the midi even.

Myself, I am a midi whore.

Re: AEP & ISAT Present: Jazzyspoon - Competition in the Mutation of Sound

Technically if you use MIDI you're doing a cover not a remix aren't you?

I mean what would be the difference if I imitated the melodies by ear instead of using MIDI files - and what part of the original work would I then be using?

Technically, I guess you're right..in part. My take on it is that I'm "RE-MIXING" the original..iow, mixing it how I would like it to be, which would have to include a or some of the elements from the original track. I don't see an issue in using midi to do this, as I'm using the original vocals and some of the effects.

Re: AEP & ISAT Present: Jazzyspoon - Competition in the Mutation of Sound

i kinda just made my own track by sampling and reworking all of the content that was provided.

I did add my own atmospherics and bassline.

fairly standard for a remix from me.

:edit: oh and a key change to a relative minor, i went off on a tangent. I'm keeping it though, cause you know YOLO

Plus isn't this related to the Altered Echo Project??

I figured further into left field the better.

Um.........I used altered sound elements of the original track, used an altered form of the midi with my own sounds, and added my own musical compositional elements. The same I do for any remix, and the same people do when remixing MY tracks. It's not a facking cover.

Unless you thought I just took the original midi and slapped some sounds on it? Yikes. Please give me a bit more credit.

Re: AEP & ISAT Present: Jazzyspoon - Competition in the Mutation of Sound

Just because we're on the topic, nothing to do with Vlantis*, anything that's good will be considered...even a cover. I did a cover in fact for the fidelium AEP release "Famous Mutations."

Converted some choral audio to midi, applied piano to the midi track, adjusted the notes for variation and a played feel, applied velocity, chopped some breaks, glitched some shit, added a bass, and wound up very happy with the end result.

All that to say, so long as whatever you do is your best honest effort, nothing will be passed over merely due to a technical question of remix vs mutation vs cover vs whatever-the-fuck.

*Typically everything is all about Vlantis, I know, but in this case we have a rare exception.

Just to clarify...

It seems as though SC has disabled their system of private sharing from the past. Used to you could go in, click the pencil to edit the track, and give access to it to anyone with a SC account or select from a list of your followers. Now they use the message system and secret links. Just make sure downloads are enabled and e-mail or message us a secret link and we'll be good to go.

Edit: Dropbox links work too.

Downloaded yours too Mr. Dobson.

Thanks everyone so far for labeling your track file name with some sort of identifying artist name, makes it all so much easier. Failed to mention that in the OP.
