Yeah Holst's The Planets is pretty amazing. So many Sci-Fi soundtracks (incl. Star Wars) have borrowed from that guy's stuff...

I agree. The Planets is awesome. Listening to Mars by Holst you can totally recognise the inspiration for Star Wars.

Chopin is by far my favourite composer although listening to Elgars cello concerto will always send shivers down my spine

Also, regarding more modern compositions, the soundtrack to the film 'The Fountain' composed by Clint Mansell is amazing. Specifically the track 'Death is the Road to Awe'....

Favorite- tie between Beethoven and Chopin. Musical freaking geniuses. Their lives were dedicated to music.

Re: Favorite classical composer?

Quite uneducated in classical, but Stravinsky and Ligeti would get my vote.

And Zappa :p

Re: Favorite classical composer?

I was sick last weekend. So I went through some old records.

I had a copy for Leonard Bernstein conducting Mussorgsk's Pictures at and Exhibition. The Baba-Yagá's Hut was particularly creepy and good listening for getting in the Halloween spirit.

Debussy, Ravel, Schumann, Bartok when he wasn't dissonant.

as much as i may hate your "theory of life" and your "make pretty shit" approach to things:
these are all fine choices for a favorite composer.
they all basically painted with sounds.
Daphnis et Chloe and Concerto for the Orchestra definitely stand out in regards to that. Love these ones.

Re: Favorite classical composer?

Arvo Pärt, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Verdi, Debussy, Mozart, Beethoven, Elgar, Rachmaninoff..and of course, Zimmer.

I also like listening to Jacqueline du Pré..goddess of the cell..worth a mention, even though she doesn't really fit in with the others above.
