Setting Up/Testing Monitor Speakers

Hey,

Just wanted some advice really - I have a pair of KRK Rokit 6 speakers and I love them. However, I'm convinced the right one is broken.

It might just be me but I feel like it's a lower volume than the left and I find myself constantly playing with the knobs (HF Level and Volume) on both to make the left quiter and more balance. The guy in the shop when I brought them said I'd never need to change the knobs on the back unless you were in a really big place? I'm sat right infront of my speakers! Do you guys have any suggestions?

Also do the knobs effect bass output? I'm beginning to feel like the left speaker is a bit more bassy now but I'm new to mixing so don't trust my ears.

Do you guys have any suggestions at all?

Thanks!

Re: Setting Up/Testing Monitor Speakers

Well first thing to check is you ears (no seriously) maybe not right away by an otolaryngologist but check if you swap you monitors or turn around on your chair, simple tests like that to see if you hear clearly the same thing in various ways

also if the room and everything in it, including the monitors as well as your mixing position is not symmetrical it can affect the acoustics behavior quite a lot, so again I would swap the monitors and see if the same issues appear

Off topic but I approve of original Doom avatars

Ok, back to the thread...

If you're using a PC or laptop:

Make sure the sound management on your soundcard isn't set to bias the sound somehow. Many of them let you emulate speaker positions and biases. Personally, I make sure all speaker management apps are disabled if the bastards even make it far enough onto a system of mine to get installed.

Re: Setting Up/Testing Monitor Speakers

The knobs on the back of the KRK Rokit 6 should not really affect the bass. One is gain, which would certainly make one sound louder than the other at a given soundcard volume, the other is HPF which should only affect high frequencies "HPF - high pass filter". Although if this was cranked on one monitor I do reckon it would sound more "bassy" only because that sound is overemphasized compared to the other one. If all this is ok (and your soundcard as others have mentioned, A/B some other speaker or headphones to check, if its the computer or soundcard you will have the same problem) then you need to return the speakers!

Actually, high pass filter affects the lower frequencies and lets the "higher frequencies pass" through unaffected.

OP, set both monitors to default settings (check the manual) and run some white noise and check if they deviate from each other.Place monitors correctly so that they and your head form a perfect triangle.

seems kind of crazy but i would also check the wires if you cant think of anything else that would cause this problem. You just never know lol.
