The Synthesis Challenge

So some of us were talking about wanting to get better at sound synthesis, and it was suggested that we try to create certain sounds.

Basically, someone will post or mention a sound, and then we should all try to recreate that sound using sound synthesis - no samples, unless it is a creative use of non-traditional sampling and wavetable synthesis. All forms of synthesis are open - subtractive, FM, etc.

Anyone want to start us off with a sound?

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Cool I'm in

Lets start off gently:
AZEALIA BANKS famous synth horn coming in at 1:00.

The rules are simple:
- Post the steps you took to create it
- Post your result

I guess this should have gone in the sound design sub-forum.

If a MOD wants to move it, cool.

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Here's my submission:

This is what I did:

I did this on the tempest
- first switched on 1 saw osc
- Added pitchbend (2semitones) to the high notes. This is for the pitchbend wheel, not a pitch envelope
- 24db Filter all the way down, no resonance
- filter envelope almost full up, tiny attack,
- 1/32th notes in ableton (very short) to play the sequence (F#1...... A3, pitchbend up, A3, A3, A3..... G1)
- Added a little reverb and expanded the width a bit with a 7ms delay on the left channel
- Added a limiter on the master
Record - Post -Finish

Cheers!

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Played around in FM8. I separated the two note bass part from the horn part. I couldn't hear much slide in the track on those two notes. Maybe that's cheating, but we don't know how the original was made. It's probably one synth though.

The important part was getting the attack and decay/release right. There's a bit more harmonics and it not as warm but it's straight out of FM8.

Hmm, you're right, it's probably only pitchbend on the high notes. Uploading the revisited version now

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

My ears kind of hurt now, but sometimes I hear a quick down slide. If it was the same patch it would be there depending how the notes are played or painted.

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Here's mine, the notes are all over the places, my pitch recognition is shit...
[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

DSI Evolver:
Sawtooth
Filter fully open, no resonance
Pitch envelope: not much amount 15% circa, little attack, 15% circa decay, 75% sustain

Edit: It's amazing how far I was from the original sound...

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Funny how we hear things that aren't there... I thought there was glide in it at first which wasn't, and auto has a pitch envelope, which I think isn't there. The sound auto created is cool though, reminds me of early rave parties

Shall we go on to the next sound? Any suggestions?

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

I'd suggest another "simple" one:
The noisy lead that comes in around 0:50

I think I'll use a saw (but I'm not too sure about this), white noise and a -12Db filter with some resonance.

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Easy? This was pretty hard to me! Anyway, this is my go:

I used DCAM strobe for this.
- Noise volume up (that's the only sound source)
- Filter half way down, resonance full up
- Filter type = N2L2 (12db filter with strange poles)
- keytracking all the way up on the filter (so the resonance plays the actual notes)

I tried this in a few other synths, they all sound very very different, even with the same settings. The original sounds like an ms20 filter though.

Cheers!

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Ok I took Massive. Made two noise samples that matched closest I could get to the lower part and the higher part. Using white noise and the scream filter on the high, band pass on the lower.

Loaded them into two Kontacts and figured as close as I could get to the melody. Which is some what atonal and the noise sample doesn't have quite enough tone.

I'm missing some tone on the high part but I think the noise has a similar texture.

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

It feels like there's some tonal elements in the patch, could it be filter resonance?
I made an attempt then I had to quit as we had guests tonight:

I think I got quite close...

One thing I realised with these 2 patches is that I need a keyboard with more than 25 keys...

On DSI Evolver
White noise, -24Db resonant filter tracking keyboard pitch, crank up the resonance so it will add some pitched tones, a little volume decay, a minimal touch of lfo on the resonance, very very little.
Filter and resonance settings are the most important.

Re: The Synthesis Challenge

Here mine for the 212 one. Did the best I could at my current level. I'll edit my post later and explain how I got the patch. Gotta go eat!

Here the description of my patch. I used Massive v. 1.3. I will be describing it so that anyone could try to create with any synth. I'll be using the numbers 0-127 and the numbers on a clock to describe the amount.

- Used one osc: "Squ-Sw I" and have the Wavetable position all the way to the right. So basically a sawtooth, and "intensity" to the right, as well. This osc is routed to a filter.
- Used "LowPass 4" filter, and set it about 9 o' clock (31). No resonance.
- Amp envelope = attack at 9 o' clock (33), decay around 11 o' clock (around 50), and release around 9ish (37).
- I routed the filter envelope to the "Lowpass 4" filter, and set the amount of modulation to almost entirely open (in other words, around 127).
- Filter envelope = Attack at 10 (40), decay at 9 (31), and release at 9 (31).
- Finally, a pitch envelope, which I routed to the one oscillator, modulating the pitch by -0.80.
- Pitch envelope = Attack at 10-11 (47), decay at 5 (almost all the way up; around 120) and make sure the decay level is a tad raised, and release a bit more then half-way (12 o' clock-ish; around 70).
- Set the "pitch up" setting for the pitch wheel at 2.63.
- also added "glide" or glissando" at around half-way.
That's it for the initial patch. Added effects:

1) Small amount of chorus
2) A bit of a high shelf EQ
3) Small amount of Wave's "Doubler."
4) Compression
5) Side-chain comp. against the kick
6) 2 reverbs: Medium Hall and Bright Plate. Also added a stereo widener on the plate reverb aux.
7) Sent to an 'Exciter' bus for added top end.

For the actual lick, I used the pitch wheel and/or used the MIDI automation to automate the pitch.

Did I miss anything?
