Melodic drops, or Bass drops?

As a producer or listener, What do you prefer making/listening to? a tight melodic drop with colour and harmony? Or a heavy driving bass drop?

Personally i love both. Just being listening to BBC Radio 1 and alesso's 'Years' is a cracking song, this song has a great melodic drop. I also listened to Hardwell - 'Spaceman' and the bass drop on this is insane!

So what do youi think? Cheers, Aperio

I prefer no drops.

Or maybe raindrops.

False drops, the musical version of a faked orgasm.

That Hardwell tune's got quite a cool drop. Coincidently, very SHM?!

Re: Melodic drops, or Bass drops?

I strongly prefer the melodic drop,(if there is a drop at all) especially with lots of percussion. I hate it when a song builds and builds to a section that is significantly emptier than the buildup.
It's like being on a roller coaster that drives uphill for two minutes straight only to drop ten feet at an unimpressive speed, then coast gently for the rest of the ride.

Re: Melodic drops, or Bass drops?

I agree false drops, something unexpected, something not quite satisfying in the way the listen expects is always better. Dance music is about that endless build and "never reaching the top of the mountain" so to speak...DJ sets used to be these beautiful endless builds that kept reaching higher and higher.

Now it's just about the fucking drop. Pfff....boring...

Totally agree in headphones, but on a big system I love it when things are getting all hectic in the break, then the beat comes in clean and just focuses everything--can be really powerful.

I refute my previous post having realized the actual best drops: gumdrops.

Honestly, a well-placed 'drop' can be awesome, but it gets old very fast for me when every track is generic intro-build-drop-build-drop-outro.

Re: Melodic drops, or Bass drops?

I'll agree that a lot of mediocre music will have cookie-cutter approaches to drops, which is an instant turn -off. But I can definitely get down to either bass or melodic drops. It depends a lot on the build-up and the rest of the song's emotion/contents.

Sorry didn't really give a definitive answer there haha
