Icon5 How do you create a shepard tone effect?

Does anyone know a feasible way to create a descending Shepard tone? Im wanting to create a really long ongoing one for a 6 minute track but i cant quite figure out how to do one and make the loop untraceable. Anyone know how to?

Re: How do you create a shepard tone effect?

make an osc
make it descend at a steady rate
make it fade in/out smoothly
duplicate it, offset the start time
do that last thing again, offset by same amount of time
do it again
again
again
etcetera etcetera until it's a nice thick tone

also to add on to what ghyt said, add the fade in/out over a decent amount of time. your shepard tone may need to fade in and out over 5 octaves to get the desired effect.

Also when the new tone fades in, it wants to be an octave above the tone that you're layering it over. The two different tones should be in harmony so that they blend together and sound less like separate tones.

You could do this with ramp LFO on pitch and volume envelopes, etc...or you could buy/use this:

Saw this video recently and remembered reading about it here.
I thought this was a nice explanation and demonstration of the technique.

Also, you could use a single oscillator and setup audio tracks to bus the audio and adjust the track offset +/-.

Even more clever, just create one audio track, setup your delay offset and then duplicate this track and bus to the track just duplicated and so on and so forth.
