Which laptop(s) are you using?

I am still using my old toshiba satellite. I upgraded to 2 GB ram and I can´t really complain. Wanted to buy a Macbook, but then I thought "too expensive...overrated".

So what are you using? Either live or at the studio...or both?

HP dv6000 with very substandard parts. But I got it for free, so I'm not complaining. It can just get slow sometimes.

A Mac Book Pro I got in 2007. I just had the hard drive replaced last summer and I should probably pop another RAM chip in it.

Re: Which laptop(s) are you using?

i've got an hp dv6-3167eo.
i5 and all that jazz. 7.2k rpm harddrive which is nice other then that; it's SHIT.

i swear to god the "HP" stands for "Horrible Products".
as with most oem they have their own special drivers for just about anyhting. unlike most oem's, their diy rolled drivers doesn't work.
the battery runs out so fast you wouldn't even think that there's a battery in the piece shit to begin with (yeah, it ran out in about 1.5 hours when it was brand spanking new mind you). the soundcard is horrible. also you can't hackintosh the piece of shit so you are forced to use windows, and thus you are forced to use HP's own drivers, which are SHIT.

my brightness on my display are turned down to the lowest upon ever resume from hibernation and it started happening quite recently. an uninstall and a re-install of the very same driver, and the very same version solves it.

my graphics card refuses to be able to switch between the built-in and the ati hd card after a bit of use; the only way to solve this is to uninstall the driver, reboot, then reinstall the same driver, with the same version, then reboot again. this happens frequently, and i thought it was down to updated stuffs with windows and/or services running automatic updates.

turns out, it wasn't. it just, on occasion, decides to stop working properly and this is the only solution to fix it.

since it's a driver issue and not a hardware issue (i have tested and retested it time and time again, including some fancypancy linux terminal workage) i can't turn it in and get a new one either since that only covers hardware fault. oh, and since it's Horrible Products, a driver update is about as likely to happen as a second big bang while the first one is still expanding.

these are just a few issues.
oh, and also; they have a locked BIOS, which anyone with a little bit of computer knowhow should know is a major letdown.

in short, if you are using your computer for, oh i don't know, anything other then to check your mail and surf around with, do not buy this piece of shit. when it works, it works pretty good, but it rarely does unfortunately. this is mainly due to their drivers as they are the ones always messing up.

then the fact that you are more or less locked down to using windows (since they roll their own drivers and rarely releases propriatery (spelling?) drivers for nix, and they are pretty damn hard to hackintosh) is just a whole other FUCKING ANNOYING AAARGH!

Re: Which laptop(s) are you using?

I'm using a Dell Latitude E6410.
I've had no problems with it.
It works well with my microphone (several years old) and all the software I use (including many free and open source programs).

Re: Which laptop(s) are you using?

At the moment I am using old first gen Mac Mini as my main machince (I had to get a student loan to get it at the time) and a netbook with only 1 gig of ram.

The net book is balls! as in crapp. but Gets a job done. I mainly use it when gigging using it to VJ. other than that I use it as a sketchpad and fooling around in reason and rewireing to Reaper for more audio editing stuff.

IT does a job, but I wanted to chirp in cause I am in bad need of update and wanted to warn against the quick cheap fix as per my experience.

It seems that its worth thinking about what you currently need then going better for future use.

Re: Which laptop(s) are you using?

well, according to the hp forums the problems i have are not uncommon at all.
infact, they are very common and the lack of fixes and/or support is also very very common.

when i talked with hp last time via email i had a tecnical support guy who commented on alot of things but failed to actually read any of my information i provided to him, so when i said that i had done this this t his and that and that, checked this and that, and also triple checked this and that with both this operating sy stem, and that operating system, he simply asked me to perform some steps that i already did.
when i replied and said tha ti already did those steps (again), and actualy did do them (again), he continued stepping down the computer troubles 101 list that he apparently learned ont he back of that cornflakes box where he got his techspecialist knowledge from, until i simply stopped replying to him and just troubleshooted myself using my own methods, since he apaprently didn't read my results at all anyways.

Re: Which laptop(s) are you using?

i use a mid 2008 macbook with 4 gigs of ram for making music. it works fine running ableton, although nowadays it seems to struggle a little when i build up more complex tracks.

i also use a new asus eeepc r101d for school and everything else. its running ubuntu, and i have no complaints about it

you know what's even more fucked is that if that guy actually did try to do something other than just run down a generic list of troubleshooting bullshit, he'd probably get bitched out for not following procedure, even if he resolved your problem by some great mOtHeRfUcKiN mIrAcLe, HoNk hOnK

well considering that he had no idea about half the things i told him i doubt he knows a single thing about computers.

i asked him while we were talking if there was a way to increase the FSB busspeeds and he asked me what an FSB bus is. for a computer techspecialist he was exceptionally clueless about computers.

Re: Which laptop(s) are you using?

@gbsr,hmmm...now you have me a little worried.....
normally i can fix any problem on my own,i used to build my own computers.
however the technology has changed considerably, and i have been following
as best as possible,i usually dont rely on tech support, because in the past they
have been complete buffoons!im sorry to see nothing has changed.
i hope you resolve your problems soon!!
