Getting back into it // your setup

Hey guys!

So I haven't made IDM for maybe like 6/7 years now. I got involved in bands and started producing Indie records and things like that. Taking the time out i've ended up working on records recently for Rudimental and Clean Bandit amongst others and so it's made me want to get back into producing alongside what i'm doing now.

So I used to use FL studio on a crap PC tower, now I mostly produce on Protools on a mac. So i'm interested as to the setups most people are using to produce nowerdays. Not sure if anyone I used to know still does it. I'll probably go under a new name for it and stuff. But yeah, fire away your ideas of what might be good for me to check out. I know FL studio has been talking about a mac beta for a long time but does anyone know if it's any good? I used to love the workflow.

Are you looking for ITB solutions, plugin recommendations, hardware, or all of the above?
Glad you're back.

To someone with experience but getting back into electronic music I'd recommend Ableton Live and Push 2. If you're looking to go hardware I'd look at Elektron. Find a box of theirs that tickles your fancy and order it. Resale value it's nearly a no lose situation. Plugins you could look at Serum and Diva but anything bundled with your DAW will be good enough to get you going.

Re: Getting back into it // your setup

There's a version of fl that works nicely on mac, but 3rd party plugins might not work on it.

Re: Getting back into it // your setup

If it's any consolation about FL Studio on a mac, I haven't tried it, but I got FL Studio versions 9(?) through 12 to work on Ubuntu Studio Linux in terms of basic use. It wasn't so good for CPU use, and a lot of demos wouldn't play correctly, but composing was still possible. The step sample editor works really well. I mention this since Mac OS is similar to Linux. FL Studio worked even slightly better on AV Linux but that OS was less stable and evetually crashed, so I ditched it.

These days I moved temporarily back to Windows, so I'm not doing all the fun Linux stuff, but it was a great learning experience.

Sorry I don't have much to offer about Mac knowledge. I've used them in the past, but it was all system 6.0.5 thru 9 type of stuff on used computers in Classic mode. There was some wonderful Classic freeishwarez back in the day. But these days I don't do anything but payware and full freeware.
