Listen to it? Sit down next to a metronome or put a metronome app on your phone or something and count the beats as you play the melody.

Re: detecting time signatures

You can probably find a youtube tutorial on some typical non 4/4 time signatures. it helps to hear something simple and count along.

Re: detecting time signatures

Even if you're new to irregular time signatures, you can still sketch them out in 4/4 and set your loop points appropriately. Upload the loop here and someone can point you in the right direction.

If it's not gelling with your tempo once you quantize, it's not a clash of time signatures; you're just not fleshing out your idea appropriately on the grid.

Also, 4x4 as in four-to-the-floor, or 4/4 as in the standard time signature?

Try learning/understanding meter, and the difference between a pattern and a time signature.

Re: detecting time signatures

Find a basic theory book and practice clapping out the time signatures. If it has a waltz type sound it will most likely be 3/4 or 6/8/ If it sounds regular on the beat it is going to be a even time signature like 4/4. Just practice counting it out.

Re: detecting time signatures

1. listen for downbeat. basically 90% of music has a pulse. the part where you bop your head downward in concordance with the beat. it's the beat. you know what a beat is.
2. so yeah start counting them but it gets easier when you start dividing those so:
3. count out sensible and even temporal divisions between downbeats (aka cut all those beats you just counted in half then count those)
4. place that number you counted over pretty much 4 or 8
5. you have a time signature now yay

it would have worked perfectly for this instance. keep it in mind for next time and after some practice youll be able to throw ideas together pretty quickly.

Re: detecting time signatures

Thing is, you just have to listen to music like this:
Quote:
1234
2234
3434
4234
1234
2234
3234
4234
1.....
If you dedicate a month or so to ALWAYS doing this when you listen to music then your brain will just do this automatically. Shit, I can't listen to music if I need to concentrate simply because of the mental attention it consumes unconsciously.

As a rule always assume something is 4:4 and then listen to how many beats there are before things repeat themselves... So after 16 / 32 / 64 / 128 beats if things are not "resolving" on or around those, then it's a different time signature.

Then after a while you realise that most music isn't that complicated and there's a good chance a lot of what you hear will n:4...

------------------
