[Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

Just wondering, Whats your approach when writing new piece of music. I know some folks like session view while others prefer to write their music entirely in arrangement view.
What is your work-flow like?

I personally, well 8 out of 10 times start with session view as it gives me more room for experimenting and auditioning my tunes. Downside is, all of my session view songs never make it to arrangement view thus never get completed! Whereas the ones i started in arrangement view are almost complete, lol.

Re: [Ableton] Session Or Arrangement?

It depends. If I have a very clear idea of what I want to do, I'll start up in arrangement view. If my idea is more diffuse, I'll start in session view. If I start in arrangement view I rarely change to session view except when I check volume meters/headroom. If I start in session view I usually stay there as long as I can.

It also depends on whether my percussion (or in rare cases some other part of the track) need lots of micro edits or not. If that's the case I'll obviously do that in arrangement.

My best tracks are usually mainly written in session view, actually.

for writing linear music - arrangement

for writing more loop based/electronica stuff - session

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

Depends, when I'm starting from nothing at all I use the session to build something up. If I already have a general idea I mostly start in arrangement right away.
I always end up in arrangement view pretty fast though, from the moment I have a general structure I only work in arrangement view and only use session view for mixer controls.

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

I would suggest arrangement view. You can make loops all day in session view, but for a song, an evolving track needs automation to keep interest. Arrangement view is just easier for that. The only time I'm in session view is when I'm working on the mixdown. Thats just me though, If something works for you, and works well, stick with it.

+1^. Very good point, usually get bored of my music bc it all sounds the same in session. Whereas in arrangement view one can layer sounds and create an atmosphere of the song, i will stick with arrangement for now!

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

Both. I need the arrangement view to chop samples, I use the session view to load loops and try and get an idea of the structure of the track, then I record a quick scrap that I can edit using the arrangement view.
I've got an APC40 controller, it unlocks a lot of possibilties in the session view

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

I'm currently on Sonar X2 but will be switching to or adding Live in the near future. The main reason for that being session view. Personally I think arrangement view in Live compared to other DAW's doesn't quite hold up as it feels crammed. However I can relate to your pov that session view tends to stay in a 'jam-based' state and it's difficult to transpose to arrangement view and actually finish a song. Overall I think it's great Live gives you the choice.

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

I'm always in arrangment view for the simple fact that I like editing audio. It's my favorite part of the composition phase. Everything from making small glitches to moving large chunks of it around.

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

I shit you not, I've been using Ableton for five years and don't know how session view works. I had friend try to explain it to me last October, but it was like he was speaking Chinese. I guess my musical brain just doesn't work in session view.

Arrangement only. Eventually i use session view to test simple things more quickly (which would not be needed if arrangement view had better workflow as in other DAWs).

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

I usually get a couple of grooves going in session view, the I build it up in Arrangement View. Getting the groove going is much easier for me in session view. Besides, I see Session view as one of Live's main advantages over other DAWs.

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

I only ever use arrangement view if I'm testing something out on my MIDI controller or just fooling around. All of my released tracks have been done arrangement-wise, and slicing audio really is a pleasure.

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

As I use straight audio hits for my drums I start in the arrangement view, then I consolidate to clips and keep going back and forth.

Sometimes I do my drums in midi when I'm just messing about and just use the session view, but I've never finished a track this way.

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

^interesting you say ghis about straight audio for drums. I've been doing this recently, not even using the rack, just dropping hits in on the timeline.

Drum racks are pretty efficient but I've been getting better results this way. Sure does take more time though.

haha this ^ I have never made sense of session view and I don't intend to, for me arrangement makes the most sense for workflow

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

i used to use arrangement 95% of the writing process, until i played around and discovered the advantages of working in session view. it just feels smoother when writing a song, as you can remain in a constant play while you're working. i agree with that automation is needed to keep interest but you can automate in session view really easily and i almost find it easier to do than in arrangement. i guess i'm more of a looper though and it does depend on what you're actually making and your personal preference with writing.

I use clip view when starting a new project/track to throw different ideas together and then switch to arrangement once I have a vague idea of where things will go

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

I go back and forth a lot. My workflow is: Make stuff in arrangement view, throw it into session as a loop that I can improvise over, take that back into arrangement view, repeat until dead.

I used to make music solely in session view and it fucking crippled my tracks. Everything I made sounded static and boring and as a result I would never finish anything. Session view is cool but it has some major draw backs for me...

Also, turning quantise off helped with my rut, but thats a different discussion.

Re: [Ableton Live] Session Or Arrangement?

For me, it's both all the time. What I really like to do is make a whole song in session view, record it 'live' to arrangement view and then tinker with extra automation parameters.

Lately though, I bounce the two back and forth and end up using a weird combination and finishing wherever the fuck I feel like. Flexibility, Ableton's got it.
