Re: Tutorial: Synthesizing a Kickdrum

Nice tutorial!

I've always found the synthesizing percussion parts of soundonsound's famous, "synth secrets" series interesting. They are a little daunting for the less technically-minded but maybe will hold some of you over.

Or if you wanted to learn WAY more about percussive sounds and their characteristics.

They are towards the middle.

Hey, this is awesome, finding out how to do everything in this tutorial really opened my eyes with regards how everything in ultrabeat works. And of course now I can synthesize a kick

I'm getting phase cancellation betwen the pop and the body! I try differn't setting on attack, deacy and pitch envelope and lowcut. But it's still there!

Any tip are welcome!

Re: Tutorial: Synthesizing a Kickdrum

Yeh, seems to just take a lot of tweaking to iron out, I often find with making kicks that I get unwanted clicks too. Again, tweaking can fix it but not always in a satisfactory way. Anyone have some advice in these areas?

You are just going to have to play with the envelopes.

Re: Tutorial: Synthesizing a Kickdrum

If you're into this kind of thing, Ableton Live (7 and higher) is really great for this. Because you can use Operator with it's flexible FM synthesis to fill up those Drum racks and create percussion sounds limited only by your imagination. The possibilities are vast, because then you can change any parameter of any sound at any moment. If I hadn't been so lazy about it, I could have used such a thing more extensively in some of the tracks to show you, but unfortunately I just stick to a couple of most common things to automate, like attack, decay, etc.
