Thinking about building a Modular Synth

I work with electronics all day for my work, so I am curious if it would be a good move to build an analog synthesizer....seems like fun! I can dig the idea of twiddling knobs all day for that perfect sound. Seems deliciously tedious! Mwahahahahahahahaha

Re: Thinking about building a Modular Synth

Thinking about what Automageddon gets for a nice sound out of his modular, it surely must be fun.
Btw I think you should have posted this in the general music chat category.

Re: Thinking about building a Modular Synth

I love my small modular rig, despite it's numerous limitations and I can't recommend one strongly enough.
They're not for everyone though.

Do you want to build your modules from scratches (ie buying components, circuit boards etc) or just buying the ready-assembled modules and build your own synth?

I did the second, so I bought mine module by module as I don't have the knowledge to do electronics stuff.

If you want to go fulll diy I can only suggest Elby design [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
the panther system looks supercomplete!

Or maybe the doepfer diy synth board

really really cheap and complete

Re: Thinking about building a Modular Synth

I was looking at the diy synth for quite a bit! It looks pretty cool! I could definitely manage putting all the Pots on myself. Also, I have been looking at building the modules on this website [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
as they look relatively basic and seem like they would be a joy to build.

Re: Thinking about building a Modular Synth

Modulars are crack (if we believe Deadmau5s words to be true), but seriously, I believe people who start building a modular system never stop buying stuff and most modulars end up costing more than 4000 bucks.

It also takes up lots of space...

Re: Thinking about building a Modular Synth

Another good company for kits to build is Paia Electronics. I built one of their theramin kits back in college. They have analog synth modules...

Also, I work for a company called audioMIDI.com that just started carrying stuff from and Austin, TX based company called Livid Instruments. They only make controllers, but I'm sure there might be some use for their DIY kits.

- Check out the DIY link.

Cheers,
