Luddite Gaming

For my money, board games and pen and paper RPGs are infinitely more fun and enjoyable than video games. In these modern times where people have begun to spend less and less time actually interacting with each other (IRL, meat-space), there is nothing better than getting together with a bunch of people in the same room and actually having an experience together.

So, anyone else into board games/RPGs?

This week sees the release of the newest mega-game from Fantasy Flight -

Really looking forward to playing it this coming weekend.

We also just kicked off our new Gamma World campaign - should be fun.

Re: Luddite Gaming

I tried playing DnD but I really sucked at it because I don't play too well in fantasy worlds. And also I have a hard time coming up with characters that I can get into. It's taken me like 6 years to make the characters I have right now for the story I'm writing. It's really an issue of not being as good as I think I should be at RP, and not having that dedication to it to force through learning it better.

I usually play games more for the mechanics they present, and the limitations and ways you can bug them out. It's a lot more tactile interaction. On that note I do like board games, like Risk is fucking awesome, but I don't have a lot of friends and the ones I do have are too scatterbrained like me and don't have the will to commit to a three plus hour game of risk regularly... oh and they mostly live very very not near to me.

I also tried getting into Magic cards a few years back but same issue with the no friends who do it couple with being a broke fuckin' kid with no way to ever buy new cards.

Um, yeap, rambly. Don't let this give you the impression I don't like those kinds of games or anything, however. They're just not something that I've found to be enjoyable for me. Also i think the right people and setting for the game is important - the DnD I was playing was with a group where I didn't know some of the people and there was people coming and going and combined with a setting I'm not really fond of... not a recipe for me having fun.

Re: Luddite Gaming

I fully get what you're saying. Having the right group is uber-important. It's tough to find the right people to play with. And yes, RPGs are hard to get into. As I get older, I do prefer more structured board gaming experiences. Many of these have lite-RPG elements.

Something like Arkham Horror, or Tales of the Arabian Nights scratches the RPG itch, but they are still board games.

I get together with a small group about twice a week. We usually meet up in a bar or coffee shop.

Re: Luddite Gaming

I used to be the biggest AD&D nerd around; Warhammer as well (the rpg as well as the tabletop wargame). I still have all the rule books proudly displayed at home.

Problem is, no-one, I mean no-one, in Oz does this anymore. The old shops that used to have rows and rows of manuals etc have all gone over to just having action figures etc. The whole idea is alien to people in these parts nowadays.

Shit sux, becuase no computer rpg is ever going to be as good as the real thing.

My roommates and I play Twilight Imperium every now in then, its not nearly as fun as it could be with only 3 people playing but its hard to find a good group to play board games in todays society like you guys said.

Re: Luddite Gaming

I had the best pen and paper rpg party ever.
For about 10 years we met once a week to drink and play together, we had the best time ever, epic campaigns and shared great memories.
I quit when I moved to the Uk, but those nights are one of the things I miss most from Italy.
The highlight of those years were Warhammer's Imperial Campaign and the death of one my characters in Vampire The Masquerade.
I died but I redeemed myself.

And I agree, no computer game will ever be as cool as this.

Re: Luddite Gaming

Board games: I have most of the add-ons for Carcasonne. That's pretty fun and easy to pick up.

I've had various gaming groups on-and-off for the last 12 years or so, since I started at university and joined the RP soc there. For the last 5 years, I've been lucky enough to have a large friend-base living nearby, plenty of whom have an active interest in pen and paper gaming. I guess those of us who did piqued the interest of the others, so most of my closest friends have, at some point, given it a go.

Personal favourite game is an intependent one called Dogs in the Vineyard. Players are effectively lawmen ("Watchdogs") travelling between a scattering of small mormon-style religious communities in the frontier of the new world, rooting out sin & keeping spiritual demons at bay. It's very easy get to grips with the setting, so immersion isn't difficult. The mechanics are cleverly designed to lead any situation towards conflict, and any conflict towards escalation. This means that the group tend to wait with baited breath while one of their number holds his gun to the head of a sinner, trying to decide if he should pull the trigger. One session, centered on an estranged wife living in sin with her dying lover was easily one of the best I've run, and I don't think they pulled a gun once (though IIRC think it came to blows between the player characters). We all came out feeling like we'd been at the centre of something epic and powerful. I had a bunch of more exciting things to pull on them (villagers in arms against a weak steward, and some demonic possession), but I didn't need to use them in the end. It was intense enough around the death-bed.

I might also point out, by the way, that the guy who wrote this game wrote something beforehand called 'Kill Puppies for Satan', so it's not like it's fundamentalist propaganda.

Currently playing in a game of Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. Fun, though I have to admit that the GM's own plot arcs have been much better than the introductory one offered by the book.

Definitely. I joined a group of 'hardcore' DnD players for a short while and found it excruciatingly painful. I don't turn up every week to argue for 3 hours over how much rope we should take into the dungeon when we descend into it.

Dungeon crawls bore the hell out of me, anyway. Here's to human interaction and moral ambiguity!

Hell yeah!

It has been entirely too long since I got my rping fix. I used to play D&D with some friends but I got really sick of it once they all discovered powergaming and we ended up with a whole party of nameless tanks.... After that I tried running a bunch of different games with different groups, and I liked that but I missed focusing on one awesome character.

My dream would be to have two groups, one that I gm'd and one that I got to play in.

What are you guyses favorite rpg systems/settings?

personally I am a sucker for cyberpunk 2020 and 7th Sea, but I love to check out new games

Re: Luddite Gaming

I used to GM Rolemaster for some friends. Great stuff.

One of the highlights (for me) was turning one of them into a Werepanda - every full moon he'd get urges to chomp bamboo and be unable to get a shag.

Paranoia was also a hoot. All kinds of deranged and twisted fun.

The Computer is your friend. Trust the Computer.

I once run out of clones in less than 2 hours at Paranoia.
Big laughs, but that is the only rpg with a higher mortality rate than Chtulhu.

Re: Luddite Gaming

Now we're talking.

I'm a huge game fan but I unfortunately abandoned it during a number of years while I pretended to be a cool DJ/producer. Now that I realize that was false, I'm getting back into it. Unfortunately, I don't have any friends here that I can really play with.

I'm really into card games myself:

Also, I've been slowly learning Go strategy

I used to play RPGs back in high school but I got more interested in card games over time. We used to play AD&D and I also used to Storytell for Mage: The Ascension.

I also used to play Magic: The Gathering a ton. Now a friend back in Chicago and I will make some decks and play every once in a while when I visit, which is good fun. I don't have the money (or, again, the friends here in Spain) to play regularly, though.

If you look around the web, there are some great Paranoia-related quotes.

"Citizen, you do not have security clearance for Rocket Boots. Please report your location upon impact."

Etc

And of course, there was the endless trickery trying to get your mates to appear to be commy sympathisers

I think if you go over to rpg.net you may well be surprise at how many RPG players there are in Australia. If you want to find a group you will, trust me.

The reason you dont see as many shops now is because a lot of peeps buy their stuff online form amazon & other online rpg shops also with things like drive thru RPG you can now get a lot of RPG materials in PDF downloadable format instead of buying the physical book.

Awesome game last night...

Discovered how fun it could be to play 'bad cop' in a ruthless, brutal witch-hunt style interrogation. How we laughed.

GM says he loves to run games for our groups. Literally all he needs to do is prepare some NPCs and feed us clues. We provide the rest.
