I knew you were from Venus, Muse

The moon is huge here now, but I doubt the phone cam would do it any justice. Maybe if I went outside to shoot it, hmmmm

that is amazing! especially considering each planet they observe would require the exact same eccentric orbit to pass over their star in line with hubbel/our sol.

Re: IDMF Space Program

Birthday present to me, a brand new meteor shower in the early am hours on the 24th. I will catch this one!!!

http://www.space.com/25984-camelopar...parations.html

"An exciting new meteor shower – the Camelopardalids – might peak this Friday night and Saturday morning (night of May 23-24, 2014), according to clocks in North America. And, although no one can be absolutely sure, mid-latitudes in North America are predicted to have the best view of this shower. It’s coming up soon! This possible shower stems from Comet 209P/LINEAR, discovered in 2004. If the predictions hold true, Earth might be sandblasted with debris from this comet, resulting in a fine display of meteors, or shooting stars on the evening of May 23, and the morning of May 24. Follow the links below to learn more about the possible 2014 meteor shower of Comet 209P/LINEAR."

Code:
Content visible to registered users only.
"When to watch, and who is best placed on Earth. The peak night of the shower is predicted for May 23-24, 2014. Models suggest that the best viewing hours are between 6 and 8 UTC on May 24. That is between 2 and 4 a.m. EDT (1-3 a.m. CDT and so on … translate to your time zone here).

Because of the time predicted for the meteor display, observers in southern Canada and the continental U.S. are especially well positioned to see the meteors in the early morning hours of May 24 (or late at night on May 23). Will the predictions hold true? They are not always 100% reliable, which is why, no matter where you are on Earth, this shower is worth a try around the night of May 23-24."

Thanks for the visual reference! I'm excited to be keeping an eye out for this one, probably going to head out in an hour or two. We just got word that it would be 2:00am, it's 11:30pm right now, but I've been keeping an hourly eye on things.

Re: IDMF Space Program

I'm about 3 hours behind you so I need to check the time. The news reports 2:00 am here as well.

I'm going out too! I'm excited as well, this is a new shower hopefully it will be productive!

They say it may be big; up to 100/hour. I'll be happy if they are slower and linger. Sometimes the meteors are so fast you start thinking you didn't see one, or saw one when you didn't.

Yeah, I plan on driving up towards Mt Charleston which is about 45 min from my house. It's also good that the shower will be in the Northern Sky. Because of all the light pollution from the Strip the entire Southern Sky glows here.

A little more about the shower...

"A new meteor shower is born...Comet 209P/LINEAR orbits the sun every 5.1 years, with its aphelion (farthest point from the sun) lying just inside Jupiter's orbit. It is a member of Jupiter's family of comets, which consists of icy bodies whose current orbits are primarily determined by the gravitational influence of the giant planet.

Comet 209P/LINEAR is just one of over 400 Jupiter-family comets known, most of which are extremely faint. This is due to the rapid depletion of their volatiles through multiple trips to the inner solar system, brought about by their short orbital periods. (Jupiter-family comets have orbital periods of less than 20 years.)

We can therefore thank Jupiter for raising the potential of a spectacular meteor shower on Saturday morning (May 24), because the gas giant has clearly shepherded 209P/LINEAR into the orbit we find it in today. Its most recent encounter in February 2012 saw the comet pass within 54 million miles (87 million kilometers) of Jupiter."
