Master your tracks for free with these plugins

Hey everyone!

I did a quick 10 minute tutorial about creating a mastering effects chain aimed towards new users who are not quite sure what goes into the mastering process.

I am using various VSTs to achieve the results I want, and the great thing about these plugins is not only do they sound great, they are completely free to use as well. So if you've ever been curious about mastering and want to give it a shot, check out my video to see which plugins to use and a basic overview of the settings used.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional. I use my ears and try to make my tracks sound as good as possible given the tools at my disposal. These plugins to my ears sound great and are well worth downloading to take your tracks to the next level.

Happy mastering and let me know if any of this was of use to you!

Re: Master your tracks for free with these plugins

Glad you guys are interested in it! Hopefully it can be of some use.

These tools would be great for polishing up tracks before posting online, or submitting a demo or even mastering your own album release. If you really know what you're doing you can get some great results. I am still learning and don't know a lot yet but even I'm able to get some good results from these, so that means anybody can do it .

An A>B comparison is incredibly telling. Use these tools and then A>B them with A= all effects on and B= all effects off. The difference will amaze you. Suddenly that mix you were listening to for hours that you thought sounded great as-is sounds lifeless and dull. It's really because your ears have become accustomed to the newer, affected sound with the mastering effects turned on that when you turn them off you can hear the drastic difference. Try it for yourself and see.

Also, make sure to read the video description and get the extra plugins that I didn't show in the video but have since added to my mastering chain. They are an exciter effect and then a compressor that allows for parallel compression. The compressor can be any of your choice but you have to read up on parallel compression and how it works to get the most out of it.

You may also add a mastering reverb effect (EpicVerb works great for this and it's free!) to use just a tiny pinch of reverb on your master to make everything gel together. Just don't overdo it.

Happy mastering!

Re: Master your tracks for free with these plugins

These plugins look really good. I'd try all of these out if I wasn't so hellbent on Ozone 5. The rescue sounds exactly like Ozone's widener, imho. The video peaked a lot where you were talking about 'catching the peaks', but this is probably youtube's doing or something. I just thought it was funny when it happened.

Great video, though. You seemed to have found a really fucking good combination of VST's. Can't believe those are all free.

Bootsy plugins are so good, you could really use just those to get the job done. I used a mix of different sources but the possibilities really are endless when you experiment yourself. But yes, Bootsy makes fantastic sounding plugins. Really amazing that they are free.

No problem. Hopefully it helps introduce you to mastering! It definitely helped me quite a bit. Just make sure to experiment with them and use your ears. If you experiment you can get some great results with these plugins. Good luck!

Thanks! It is hard to believe they're all free because they sound so good. I'm sure Ozone 5 is better but these plugins really do sound good enough for me. In the future I will try and compare them with Ozone and see how they sound. But for now, this is my go-to mastering chain.

And the peaks thing must be YouTube, because that limiter pretty much catches everything and keeps things from clipping. Weird!

Thanks for watching all!

Re: Master your tracks for free with these plugins

Thanks for the good VSTs.

personally, I think in the demo video it sounded better before cutting the mids, but that's just my personal taste. It's still a good demo video. Those Terry West plugins are nice. They are donationware/freeware from Terry West's main site on the VSTplugins pages.

If you don't like LoudMax for some reason, BuzMaxi3 limiter is alot similar. Also freeware even though it's somewhat vaporware.

I have to admit, although I have troubles getting the levels just right, that Terry West plugin is a game changer! Thanks for the tip.
