DJ section and buy/sell section

This forum is great an' all, but there should be a section for discussing DJ'ing. There's a section for listening to live sets etc. But no dedicated DJ section, and after all the ultimate aim of IDM is that DJ's play it in front of an audience.

So yeah for me, it would pretty much eliminate the need to visit any other forum really if this site had a DJ section. You know, like where DJ's can talk about techniques, tips and tricks with regard to improving DJ'ing skills and live sets. This section could then be broken down into 2 or 3 subcategories like 'turntablism' for scratch, battle and turntable discussions, 'digital/controllerism' for anything related to software and controller based DJ's, and maybe like 'general DJ'ing' for discussions about, well, general DJ'ing, such as what tunes are working at the moment, help with getting gigs, feedback on how other members tunes went down in a club environment or how they sounded on certain systems, new equipment and reviews, things that have happened whilst DJ'ing, and so on and so forth. The live set section could also be included in this part of the site.

Anyway, just a suggestion. Would be nice to see it happen though.

Also, on a side note. A buy/sell section wouldn't go amiss.

+1 for DJ section (even if I'm not) and buy/sell subforum.

Re: DJ section and buy/sell section

i think there are usergroups for both of those, and I believe the stated reason for not having a buy/sell forum is because they don't want to attract spammers and whatnot.

and who says that IDM is meant to be DJ'd? I always saw it as somewhat the other way around. And it depends where you're from and why you make your music. You can't just pidgeonhole it and say 'IDM is meant to be DJ'd.' fuck as it is, the majority of what I'd consider IDM isn't what most people would consider danceable.

and anyways lots of DJing discussion happens in the studio forums.

Re: DJ section and buy/sell section

Maybe instead of a "DJ" section it would be more appropriate to have a "Live PA & Performance" sub-forum.

100% Agreed ^ - DJ chat belongs in the side room in this forum IMO.

Re: DJ section and buy/sell section

21 posts in and already calling the shots eh?
Should we add a specific section for keyboards, guitar and other instruments while we're at it or is it only djing that interests you?

Nah just DJ'ing dude. Word! Although to be fair, an instrument section would be pretty sweet. Oh and while you're at it might as well bung a used car section in there, and a singles section would save me a fortune from having to visit all those expensive dating sites!

Nice one

Without getting into a heated debate cos the intention of the OP isn't about what music is labelled as what genre or whether it was intended to be played in the club or what ever, but let me rephrase; a vast majority of artists that make IDM/EDM make it so with the aim or even the dream of it being played in a club by their favourite DJ or even just a DJ somewhere in the world. Also a vast amount of artists that make IDM/EDM DJ themselves and play their own and other peoples records, and I would be quite shocked if no members of this site actively DJ. It's no secret that IDM/EDM and DJ'ing go hand in hand. So without focussing on the the finer details of whether specific tracks can or can't be danced to, I'm merely saying a DJ section would be awesome.

Sorry if I caused offence

Re: DJ section and buy/sell section

who said anything about being offended?

I agree with Anodyne that a performance section would be cool, covering both DJing and other forms of live performance. Besides, the line between DJing and original performance can be rather blurry at times. If I create a new song live out of samples and stems from other people's music, that sounds absoluetly nothing like any of the original source tracks, am I DJing or making original music? What if I play other people's tracks mostly un-effected but jam over it with a synth and play with the arrangement on the fly? What if I mix in a traditional DJ style with two decks and a crossfader but it's entirely my own music?

Not an attack on you personally or anything. Just saying, what you said is not strictly correct. Some IDM is club music and some club music is IDM but the two are absolutely independent of each other; beyond that not all music that might be played live with electronics is necessarily going to be club music or DJ'd.

DJ's might aswell do this. ^

I don't really agree with DJ's taking credit for other people's art unless they do something intricate with it live, and make it their own. and do so in a very skilful and unique way..

If I was ever to DJ it would only be because it's the simplest and most efficient medium to get my music across to other people. If an artist creates tracks and dj's them live for other people to hear, I have no issue. It's the DJ's that mix other artist tracks (and none of their own - strictly other peoples) that I have a problem with - there's simply lack of talent in playing two songs at the same speed as eachother, and trust me with the right equipment it's really not difficult. Anyone who says different obviously has no sense of timing or can't count to 4. Really, it's that easy if two songs are at similar tempo's

I suppose I have to thank DJ'ing as a part of my interest in music though - my dad is DJ which got the ball rolling in my interest in music, and he tought be how to 'DJ' when I was about 7. It's a skill i'd like to require incase I ever do happen to perform my EDM live, but if I'm not gonna perform my OWN music (and i think anybody should have the same mindset as this) then I shouldn't use it at all.

Just my opinion - no doubt a lot of people will disagree but hey
