A topic for DJs :)

Hi all ! This is a kind of survey...I just wondered : which material are you using for mixing ?
-Turntables+Mixing console+Vynils ?
-Turntables+Mixing console+Timecoded mp3 ?
-Laptop+external controller+mp3 ?
-Laptop+2* Winamp ?
-Something else ?

I'm using 2 turntables (SL1200)+mixing console (Ecler NUO3 - nice to use, but fucking fragile !)+vinyls, and sometimes the laptop (without timecoded) to insert some selected tracks I can't get in vinyl (but without mixing them).

What about you ?

p.s. : as I'm new here, apologies if a similar thread already exists...

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

I stopped buying vinyl about a year ago now - mainly because the shops i used to use either closed down, or just stopped stocking the stuff i wanted to buy.

Since then ive invested in 2 x pioneer CDJ1000's. i still have 2 turntables, but they tend to gather dust now more then anything else. running them all through an allen and heath mixer.

not got into the use of computers etc yet on my live sets, but its something i'm working on.

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

my good buddy has a pioneer 2-channel mixer (switchable inputs), denon rackmount cd unit and 2x technics 1200's, but we have alot of odd bits a pieces around (like a numark cd deck with a platter on top, and an m-audio dj-style controller and a denon 4-channel mixer) that we are messing with atm.

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

Pretty standard for me.
1200's w/ Ortofon Elektro's and a DJM-600 which i wanna replace with an allen & heath.
Sometimes use my comp if playing my own stuff, or the old Denons for shitty moneymakers

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

I've typically used two Numark TT200's with a Numark DM-3000x. For CD's I have a Stanton S-550 dual cd player. I buy vinyl, but only used because I usually don't a lot of money for new vinyl. Unfortunately, I haven't really touched them for a few years, save for digitizing my vinyl collection (a slow work in progress). I've been thinking about a DJ MIDI controller as it would save room (no more crates of vinyl, no more mixer or turntables), and I wouldn't have to replace the needles when they wear down.

I hear Fatboy Slim switched to mixing with time coded vinyl a while back... as he is the DJ that inspired me to get into DJing, mixing, producing and music in general, I was a little surprised and maybe a ::little:: let down to hear this, as vinyl is just so much better!!

I'm skeptical.

I'd love the compactness I'd gain from using a hard drive and a MIDI controller to DJ. MIDI is pretty good nowadays, so as long as the controllers were pretty responsive without a lot of latency (zero, preferably), I might try it. I like new stuff, but clinging onto new stuff blinds you from seeing where you came from IMO.

I'd be sad to sell all my vinyl. Maybe I'd keep one turntable, and not sell the vinyl. I mean the everything about sampling and manipulation came from turntable DJ's (and musique concrete before that as well...). We can't just forget about analog technology. There's too much history in it. It'd be sad to see it die, indeed there would something missing if that day came.

Analog tape, vinyl and analog synths.
mmmmm

Laptop
Traktor Scratch Pro
Hercules RMX, mapped for 4 decks.

Simple but very effective really, as can map the buttons to loop/effects/filters/eqs/ etc.

It does the job, the bpm detection is mostly awful, just as well I never use it really. The implementation of the effects is a bit clunky, would be greatly improved with a second rotary, but they don't get used that much anyway with having the KP3. The knobs and sliders are okay, good smooth travel on the faders without any sticking or a worrying amount of wobble.

It does the job though, haven't had any problems with pots crackling or noise being introduced from anywhere and it has the channels and features I need (with some I don't) and the ergonomics have been okay. Can't complain for the money...

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

I have a pretty simple DJ mixer. 3 channels, 3-band EQ, that's about it. A numark DM-3000x, overpaid a little for it on ebay but it serves my uses.
