MS Surface Laptop: Got Gaming lappy Instead

This comes out soon and I'm interested to see what your initial impression is.

I'm considering it as my next laptop since it seems meaty enough to handle what I may throw at it. If I do go for it, its likely to be an i7 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. Especially interested if any of you have had previous MS Surface Pros or such and have feedback on their build quality, reliability, etc.

Re: Microsoft Surface Laptop

overpriced for what they are you could get a better specked laptop for half the price,
Also had a surface pro broke within about 3 months battery life was dire and it even was when it wasnt used all that much tbh.

I don't understand why it doesn't turn the screen around. Is it still touch screen?
I still am kind of interested in a surface book too.

Re: Microsoft Surface Laptop

I end up using a Surface Pro 4 at work most days. It's a nice light alternative when I have to run down the hall or whatever. It's solidly built and the battery is ok depending on what you do with it (mostly ssh and web portal stuff), along with the occasional presentation/excel thing. It's in an office so it's not like I'm abusing it much. I've dropped it a couple of times with no ill effects. I'm not sure I'd be interested in having it as my only option. All things considered I'd probably shoot for a MBP or similar in that price range as I'm more of a standard laptop/don't touch my screen guy.

Re: Microsoft Surface Laptop

The new Surface Pro was announced today. No release date or pricing given yet. MS are dropping the numbered releases so today's announcement is what would have been the Surface Pro 5.

Re: Microsoft Surface Laptop

Personally I wouldn't get one of these..mainly due to me wanting to keep away from MS's attempt to copy Apple's business model (over-priced hardware and "cashcow" apps that need updating at a price).

Maybe I'm just getting old and turning into someone Walter Matthau would have played, but I don't view this "new" direction as in the best interests of the customer..but it seems most folks are happy with these new moves by MS and that's cool..I just won't be buying one.

When the time comes, I'll move over to Linux completely.

1 I don't see where roo was asking for buying advice,
2 there is a huge difference between the 2, namely the touch interface, which I assume is the draw to these in the first place!

Re: Microsoft Surface Laptop

Roo, you never really specified what you were looking to get out of a Surface, tablet, laptop or whatever. Are you wanting to produce/perform music with it, or just a daily driver (email, youtube, etc) sort of deal?

We've got a couple of the new Surfaces as beta testers around the office. I haven't gotten a turn in the barrel with one but I can poke at it a bit if you need info. The folks that have been using them seem to like them ok though I don't remember anyone being over the moon about them. Apparently they don't get as hot as the old ones. They sent us pens but I don't think they come stock anymore (which is kind of a bummer). No USB-C on ours, don't if they're shipping with it or not. Everything we might use is USB 2 so it wasn't a deal breaker on our end, might be different if you're looking at longer term interface upgrades.

I'd call every last Asus an absolute consumer grade piece of trash that isn't worth setting my coffee on much less trying to do anything with. Same for everything Dell outside of their business class. But then again we probably use our laptops for very different things. Horses for courses and all that. There's a myriad of ways to define 'wasting' money.

Everyone I know who has bought a Surface thinks it is the ducks nuts. They do look rather spiffy, they even outnumber macbooks at the local cafes these days. Prob useless for music tho

i was talking on a price to performance standpoint laptop wise im currantally using a razor blade pro (best laptop hands down) but everything in my main rig at the moment is asus, asus motherboard asus ram and asus gtx 1080ti strix oc gpu. The cmpany as a hole is solid.

If it works for you, great. My point is that your specific price to performance ratio isn't what everyone else uses. And I really don't care what you're using, because as we've already established we're using them for different things. While I probably wouldn't buy them myself, I don't think Asus is terrible for parts. The build quality and internal manufacturing on their mobile stuff has been awful and is mostly what I take issue with. I think it's worth spending more money on something that lasts longer when you're going to be hauling it around.

Yep, just like all those new models of cars they release every year. Real cash grab.

Re: Microsoft Surface Laptop

It does look quite nice in concept, but for someone like me in order to justify something like that it would need to work flawlessly with Ableton Live. I believe (though I could be mistaken) that Ableton surprisingly still haven't got their interface working well with touch screens.

What would be a dream for me is if Ableton Live came out on iPad, then I may end up buying one of those iPad Pros.

Re: Microsoft Surface Laptop

Thanks all for the various responses, this thread has been very helpful to me.

While I still like the idea of the Surface or Surface Pro, the price point is indeed a sticking point for what you get. Not a lot of bang for buck, though that changes a lot if portability is a priority because those Surface machines sure are nice 'n' light. I won't be gigging or doing anything where that's an issue, its a convenience item for me at home. I was still very tempted to get a Surface of one flavour or another.

One of the reasons I was waiting for the Surface announcement/releases was also the knock-on effect on other manufacturers' prices. I won't be getting a Surface and have instead today ordered an MSI GE72VR 6RF APACHE PRO.

I may do some music on it but mostly it will be gaming and a bit of admin.
