About artists with live shows and DJ sets

What do you think about artists that are touring and have 2 different shows (DJ and Live) ? There are a couple examples I have in mind like Madeon and Porter Robinson. They have their main Live show, but they also DJ occasionally.

What do you think about this? Do you like it, you don't like it?
Is that a good image for the artist?
Do you think they should stick to a concept or is a little versatility a good thing?

I mainly want to know how this kind of thing is perceived by others.

Thanks!

I think they do what they want and what pays the bills, which is the same thing I'd do given the same position.

Re: About artists with live shows and DJ sets

I was recently looking at the new top end Traktor controller. To me it seems that technology increasingly blurs the line between the two. Hawtin long ago did this decks and 808 mix, but now, you have folks routinely use four decks, looping and mangling sounds on the fly. I could see where using a setup with Traktor and Maschine would allow one to move back and forth from mixing existing tracks to the artists own work.
Coming from the other end, some acts sound more like a DJ set of the artists work anyway. Some of the Deadmau5 shows in particular.

If you enjoy it, do you care?

What I find impressive is the skill to be precise and deliberate in sculpting the sound in new and imaginative ways. Atom Heart and Pan Sonic have recorded some really nice live improvs. The recent Plastikman release comes to mind. The Minus tour. Good stuff.

When it's just stringing a few good (hopefully) records along, well... I can use Algoriddim's DJ mix app and put it on auto play. Why would I leave the comfort of home for that?

Besides the reasons that have been stated, I think it only makes sense. If it were me, there are loads more events where the attendees couldn't give a rat's ass if I am putting in 10x the effort to do a live PA because they are just there to party--and I say this merely as statement of fact.

Then there are those events were there is an expectation of a more involved performance.

Re: About artists with live shows and DJ sets

what it always meant to me is that (live) means the artists plays his own music whereas (DJ set) means he's going to play tracks, maybe some of his own, but some of other people too.

IDM downtempo / world artists Shulman play live as well as do elaborate studio recordings.
I've seen some clips of their live sets and they do well but it's not the same as the polished studio stuff which I prefer.

But I think that the band might have given up on studio albums and just plays live now. it's been a long time since they released an album and their last album was just recordings of live shows.

I think it is great to be able to have the option between the two. I can imagine it would be a huge breathe of fresh air to be able to go back and play some music that inspired you. To be able to take a break from your own music after playing show after show after show must be great. I am a huge fan of Porter and Madeon, and i would say that most artists whose music i love, i also love their taste of music that they would play in a dj set.
