Depends on how you’d like to sketch. If you want to use your own samples, iMPC or iMaschine2 work well. If it’s about the groove only, iMaschine is great, but Korg Gadget works well. GR-16 or iElectribe might work, but I’ve not used them. I recently posted a track that I made only using Gadget on my phone. Turned out quite ok.

If you did pull the trigger on the iPad, I’d warmly suggest Beatmaker 3, iMPC PRO 2, or Auria Pro.

Oh, and one more. If you want to play with your own stems by recording little loops, Blocks Wave allows you to play them to experiment with arrangements.

That looked super cheesy in the YouTube ad. Should I check it out?

I think Lemur may be slowly bringing me 'round on the iPad...

Is that the customizable MIDI controller app?

Yes. Lemur is.

I don’t care much about programming it myself, but everyone and their mom are making premapped controllers of...well...you name it.

There is a user library on the developer website. I also just googled what I was looking for (Repro 5 Lemur template). Then you can just upload the new ones via iTunes. I don't know if it works differently in other DAWs etc, but I still had to go through and "midi learn" each parameter from my DAW to the control on the Lemur surface.

The presets are cheese covered in cheese, but the app itself is pretty much the same as the new Electribe, no idea how they got around to not being sued by Korg.

Maybe they donít necessarily see it as a threat? Its likely stay between $10-$20 so I will pass for now. People in the Electribe facebook group I belong to are all excited about it. On a closer look it is damn cool for the money.

óóóó-

Iíve got sooooooo many iPad apps I never use for anything. To say have given the iPad a fair chance as part of my music making process? Its hard to say. Iíve tried synths, samplers, drum machines, FX, seqeuncers. Iíll try using them all in a song or two then I just go back to doing things the way I was before. Same story for 20-30 apps. Dunno what it is TBH.

Well, as Roland brought out the TB-03 it had Propellerheadís ReBirth taken off the App Store.

Re: The dedicated iOS thread: best apps and production tips

I'm actually deleting most apps and so I can focus on the ones I like the best, Attack for drums and bass synthesis, Nave for everything else and Grooverider because it's fun and sounds good, plus various effects.

Re: The dedicated iOS thread: best apps and production tips

I got a couple cool apps lately,
Fairlight CMI has annoying quirks but it can sample and sounds cool
X drummer is basically like ez drummer but for iPad, seems cool, havenít had a chance to do much with it yet.
And finally, midi guitar! That thing is great, Iíve been playing pads, keys etc from animoog or nave with my guitar. It has a bit of latency you need to get used to tho. But it is super fun!
