there was a contest on another forum back in the days, make a whole track using only 808 kick drum sound sample. without synths and so on. only the waveform of 808. some people made decent tracks, but for masses this quest was too hard to achieve a good results.

Yeah, there are almost TOO MANY kick/drum synths. It was just as a guide to what you can do with pitch and filter envelopes. Once you get the grip on envelopes and LFOs there are a few more doors opening up to what (and how) you can do things.
