I'm a Sigur Rós fan, but I've always considered them Post-Rock pretty much, so when I saw that they were listed in the "Discussion of music similar to Brian Eno, Sigur Rós, FSOL, The Orb, Biosphere." list, under the Ambient/Downtempo section I was kinda confused. What's the story on this?

Oh yeah, I saw that a while ago, and was confused then also. I guess they do have an etherial sound, so it's sort of a different type of Ambient I guess?

I suppose. Ambient is a pretty ambiguous term that covers a few broad aspects. Lots of music has ambient elements without being technically the genre of ambient.

I'd say they have some ambient qualities. I pretty much consider most music without drums ambient or instrumental. It's just a name man, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I always saw Sigur Ros as more alternative post-ambient rockesque dreamcore.

Well they have some songs that are post-genre ambinoise,
and some songs that are pre-ambicore moon-gaze.
I once heard an early track that had elements of post-anti-jazz-power-scandi-slowcore.
So yeah... Labels aren't so important.

Less ambient than post-rock tbh. Anyway, they have their own unique genre. They do have this typical Icelandic touch to their music.

Going to see them in a few weeks! Can't wait.

Sigur Ros are what they are, it's very difficult to label them.. They draw take from many sources..

lots of peeps call them post rock. Ambient i think, as a stereotype genre is leaning towards electronic music

It leans towards electro ambient, but it's very hard to bunch Sigur Ros into any category !

i don't think that one could listen to them and go "well this is what ambient is!"

but i do think that someone could know what ambient is and be like "sure, this can fall into it!"
