Banging on things.

Banging on my kitchen closet door provides a really nice medium decay 808 style kick. I don't know how to record it best.

Found Sound Recording 101

When it comes to recording stuff, it's more important the pick up / mic you use records really clear, rather than adding color in any way to the sound..as it's a lot less work to add your own color or distortion to a sound, than it is trying to remove it.

If you aim for clear, low-bass recordings, then you won't go too far wrong, as what you end up with is really a good starting point to work on from and experiment with, in regards to sound design.

There are recording devices designed specifically for drums/percussion with various settings for best quality .
