buy the MS2000, join a hardcore band, and go on an completely self-funded tour around the world playing mostly un-advertised shows in the sketchiest 'venues' on the planet, on the way having to smuggle your gear over hostile borders and travel though incredibly sketchy-ass places like Transnistria.

(the ms2000 is a good choice)

great story!
It has only 4-voice polyphony, is it enough?

that's up to you. if you want really huge chords played in real time then no. if you're planning on doing a lot of recording and layering with it than absolutely.

Re: Korg MS2000, or maybe something else for $ 400?

Certainly, I will not make trance/house and hard electro.

I prefer climates: John Foxx (album Matematic), Futurisk (Meteoright), The Knife, and also Daft Punk; genres: mostly synthpop/minimal wave/darkwave/new wave, but also post-punk and synth rock.

do you think that the 4-voice polyphony is enough?

Possibly a Midi keyboard and a soft-synth?

Zalgo, I thought about it, but now I think, that buying a synth, I have a MIDI keyboard, plus the sounds will play without a laptop. is it true?

ok, do you think it would be a better solution (midi keyboard and synth in one)?

remember you can send midi from your computer to the synth to play whatever you want too, which is really cool

it depends what you really want from the synth, what kind of music do you make, what sounds do you like? is polyphony important??

the ms2000 is my favorite starter synth but if you can afford the mopho you get deeper analog bass which is good.

Re: Korg MS2000, or maybe something else for $ 400?

Hardware synths are much more limited than software. Ms2000 has 4 note poly, but if you stack 2 voices for fatter sounds, you only have 2 notes left to play with. The mopho has only 1 note poly.
Also, the ms2000 has wavetables, to the sound palette is much broader.

So use software for your huge pads and stacked chords, and get a mopho/evolver/ms2000 etc for additional fun. Just listen to some YouTube vids which sounds you like most. All synths build after 1980 or so can be used as a midi controller

Cheers!

Re: Korg MS2000, or maybe something else for $ 400?

I have an MS2000B, its a good synth. The sub bass on it is real warm. Having real knobs is nice and its got some good sounds. I've found some interesting user patches out in the ether too.

One thing though, even if you sync up midi timing and stuff, there is some weird timing issues with the arp and despite my best efforts, I had to do some hacky stuff to work around it. Its like some clock drift or something so the longer your arp players the more out of time it will get (until its in time again ). Research on the net indicated a flaw in the synth. But hey, there are easier ways to do arps anyways.
