Common Patterns in Popular Music by Genre

Hi All,

I was curious to know what everyone's opinions were on common elements or patterns found in popular dance music.

The Chainsmokers are the biggest Electronic act marketed today. Daft Punk very close, and a few more.

When I listen to music from these artists, there are elements that are similar such as song structure and there are other's that stand apart; for example how vocals are placed in the track and the number of voices used.

I'd like to poll all of you and see what are some of your favorite artists and what you think is a common element or pattern found in the genre for that artist.

Re: Common Patterns in Popular Music by Genre

Thing is, it's all influentially based. I don't really feel like you'll get much of an answer to your question to be honest, because these are things you ought to research yourself. What are your influences? What are their influences? It's all part of building a unique sound all your own. A common type of sound is a forgettable one. I can't tell you how many dubstep tracks I've heard go "WUBWUBWUBWUBWUB BWAHHHH" and turned them off because they don't offer anything unique. This is a lot of the reason I can't stand trap music and current thug-rap, it all sounds the same.

I think they got famous doing mash ups and remixes. I know they headlined at the IHeartMedia festival in Vegas last year.

Im sure at this point the Chain Smokers are doing it all above board. Also the licencing to play something live versus selling it is totally different.

I happened across that. I swear...every discription I ever read of them made me think they were some kind of DJ/Mash-up duo. They really just kinda remind me of 21 Pilots, Imagine Dragons et al. All that vaguely electronic pop music.

Re: Common Patterns in Popular Music by Genre

Most common thing?

Pandering to the lowest common denominator as far as a listener. Super basic melodies delivered with the grace of a sledgehammer. You only have to look as far as any ginormo EDM fest to have the turds fill your ear holes to the max.

Chainsmokers hit on something good. Melody. Real fucking melody that engages you. I'm no fan, but that tune with the reverb guitar melody is catchy because it's actually a solid melody. Who would have thought of that in the current scene of edm? lol
