observation thread

did you ever notice that real life and prison dont have too many differences, they force you to work in both places with the major exception being that in prison you get health care.

I just quit my job. Now I'm #dad@home. Wife's happy, kid's happy, and I'm happy. Never was very keen on doing something against my will. Working is part of surviving. I could go Hunt and Gather, but I'm not really equipped for that. Worked, for 20 yrs up till now, changed job every 5 - 6 yrs. No stress, I'll find something else I like doing.

Play Night in the woods, might resonate with you.

Also, in Europe you get health care even outside prison, so there's no difference.

im not fooled, i lived outside for around 2 years, first in the woods and then homeless. i'm still thrown off by how ridiculous the workforce can be with people who never really ventured far from home controlling your paycheck and the politics seem to generally stay the same no matter where you go.

How does that work in communist countries? Are the things actually the heads of state or is more of an every thing for itself sort of Mad Max situation? What if you control the means of production? Are the things that makes the things actually the owners?

I find that quote really confusing.

Re: observation thread

It is directed mostly at the US and was a quote from fight club...

It basically means that we get so wrapped up in consumerism and verifying and evaluating our lives on what we have (just look at all the hardware threads), it makes us a prisoner to the things we own. Freeing yourself from all the bonds of a life in servitude to collecting in shit we don't really need means losing everything. Only when you truly have nothing can you see what freedom feels like.

I know there are varying degrees of owning nothing - take the homeless - they still hold a grip on whatever they have, how ever minimal those belongings may be.

It was a joke, and I'm sorry; I should know that dry humor wouldn't translate on the interwebs. I'm aware of the source, it was just a more enjoyable way of poking fun at the idea of anti-consumerism. It's a good book, Chuck just manages to take himself a bit too seriously sometimes.

I think as I grow older I care less and less about ideas like this. So what if people want to define themselves by their sofa or their truck? I really don't see any difference between that and defining yourself by your social circles or job or hobbies or religion. It's just a thing they pick to identify with and who am I to say whether that's good or bad or how good or bad? Is loving and enjoying a thing better or worse than loving and enjoying a person? That's not for me to decide, except for me.

Everyone's a prisoner to something, even if it's not being a prisoner to anything.

If you think having a job in a factory or working retail is being a slave, try living in pre-industrial society. We have it relatively easy compared to our great grandparents and their families.

There is still some indentured servitude going on in this country with illegal immigrants. Work on farms and such so they can live in the US.
