Genre based on "mechanical textures"?

So I've been a fan of Richard Devine and Vaetxh and similar for a long time, but I've also tried doing my own music.

Upon doing my experimentations I think there might be a place for a new genre that can contain more similar stuff than too separated "per song" like styles. This genre would have "mecha" like structures. Like mechanical things moving. Other artists on this style are e.g. Autechre (e.g. Gantz Graf).

So anyone else think this kind of genre could have a place in the music scene? Like if me and few other interested would start producing music for this "new" genre and hope that it could develop into a (sub)genre that had listeners. I personally find this kind of music very pleasant, because it's so varied.

Here's a quick example of mine (not mixed/effected properly yet):

But I'm proposing to work on a new genre that's predominantly just about mechanical textures. IDM is much broader than that.

Re: Genre based on "mechanic textures"?

Kind of sounds like a lot of industrial/techno/IDM type stuff that already exists. I don't know why everything has to be a new genre. Just do it : ) No musicians that inovated anything sat down and said "OK, I'm going to invent a new genre." Again, I'd just go for it.

Re: Genre based on "mechanic textures"?

That's why I like the term IDM, because it's broad.

We already have Industrial, Rhythmic Noise and Glitch music within the culture of IDM. There's really no need to be creating 'more genres' when the music you're describing already fits somewhere.

Re: Genre based on "mechanic textures"?

Almost everything I've made in the last 10 years is built on field recordings of various electrical and/or mechanical systems. Often further processed and sequenced, sometimes with things like synths or acoustic instruments, often just by themselves in various configurations. I have no idea if that's what you're talking about or not.

FWIW, I'd consider that industrial music. Like, literally. The music of industry. I just make it for my own edification and enjoyment so I don't put much thought into what it'd be shelved under. I don't know if that has bearing on what you're wanting to do.

In order to find similar music more easily. Paritculary if one wants to hear "mecha music", then a subgenre would make it easier to identify such tracks.

Re: Genre based on "mechanic textures"?

Holy shit. I can get behind this 'new' genre for sure. I've honestly never heard anything like any of the tracks mentioned before. I lose when it comes to IDM, though. All I remember is Merck and then everything went black / numb for me.

To me this is one of the most satisfying genres currently. I really like sound that is "physical" and moving.

Re: Genre based on "mechanic textures"?

kind of sounds like what I've been trying to make/already made lately. Incorporating very grainy textures and just messing around Ivo Ivanov's style (not even close) and trying to make some complex mess that sounds futuristic.

I still call it IDM though, also added "abstract" term for some reason, maybe because it sounds way cooler.

ah! Proton beat me to it. I was going to say qebrus.

So you want to create a collective of musicians who do qebrus music.

Preferably yes. It would be a very fulfilling genre to work on, for me at least. I really like this type of music and it would be awesome to attempt to make it more popular and established. Since certainly all "new" genres have to start from something?

sure, you could run a label to collect the music of such artists. It's a cool project, dude.

Haha digital mechatronics sounds a bit corny imo. As others have said, maybe you should focus on making the music and gathering same-minded artists rather than on the genre-making. Genres are only created by magazines or YouTube commenters

But genres can be useful for identifying tracks in the same style.
