Digital Mayhem - Virus A, Blofeld or Novation KS?

I'm looking for a synth to cover digital sounds - mostly drum and percussion sounds as well as pad and weird droney stuff. For Bass I usually take one of my Analogs.
Also I'll get a Minogue soon.

So I don't need an allround thingie.

The reason why I chose those three synths is because they are in the same price range.
Novation KS Rack (400 used) seems to sound a little more thin compared to the K Station, but has much more waveforms, offers multitimbrality, ability to layer sounds as well as a drum mode. Nice knobby hands on layout. No mod matrix.

Blofeld (385 new) has the most advanced synth engine, multitimbral, wavetables and seems to be stable with the most recent firmware. Not much hands on though.

Virus A (400-450 used) Actually don't know so much about it..I like how it sounds and the interface seems nice too!
Havent read much about it's engine, yet.

I'd like to hear some opinions!

Re: Digital Mayhem - Virus A, Blofeld or Novation KS?

Blofeld is quite nice at pads and stuff
But it is also quite good at other VA sounds.
Don't know about the others.

Did you not have a virus for a bit too? Didn't get along with it?

Re: Digital Mayhem - Virus A, Blofeld or Novation KS?

I hated the interface and compared to the Blofeld it sounded a bit duller, the Blofeld had a much brighter sound, maybe more digital, but it sounded better to my ears.

Re: Digital Mayhem - Virus A, Blofeld or Novation KS?

Having tried to make percussion parts w every synth Ive ever owned I really prefer a dedicated percussion synthesizer. You can probably get a great deal on a nord drum mki at this point then get something else for pads? Otherwise any symth would do imo...just needs the right envelope destinations and a noise source. As far as pads virus A and blofeld probably arent going to be very different. Ive heard Access is pretty good at supporting legacy products, so there is that.

Virus and Blofeld share the same DNA, I don't remember where I read that the same people worked on both of them and you can notice it by the synth architecture, which is pretty much the same (Not that other synths are sooo different)...

I've not sent time with the Blofeld, but I LOVE an Access Virus.

That would be my vote.

Re: Digital Mayhem - Virus A, Blofeld or Novation KS?

I own a Virus Ti2.

Hated it for a few periods of time because I think I was trying to fight against its characteristic sound. It has a very rounded-off and softened sound, or 'dulled' if you're looking for a negative characterization. Def not bright and penetrating.

I've barely played around with the generous quantity of drum (approx 300) and percussion (approx 300) presets (including the downloadable presets), but as far as I have done, they seem to be of a similar character. Dark and round.

Really, if you want unmistakable drum & percussion sounds, get something tailored for exactly that role. I.e. drum machineze.

Re: Digital Mayhem - Virus A, Blofeld or Novation KS?

Usually I get quite good drum sounds from synths in terms of sound design and sometimes I feel a dedicated drum machines/synth limits me - But never owned a real hardware drummie. Jamming around with hardware drum machines was always hella fun and sequencing-wise I prefer the hand on approach - so yeah...Thanks guys!

Btw Yesterday I found a Nord Rack 2 for 500€ and while looking for demo videos, I found this:

I've also looked into an MPC again, MPC1000 in particular which would be perfect for sequencing all my stuff when going live. Maybe MPC + Nord Drum would be cool...

MPC would me allow to even sequence stuff in Ableton, right?

Edit Woot Novation Circuit is now 289€?!

Together with a controller it would be quite a useful synths/sampler/sequencer I guess. Does it have pattern chaining? Have to look into this thing a bit and maybe do a little jam in a store...I mean it would kinda complete my setup for rather cheap (Im finally getting the Minilogue and decent monitors next months!). At least with the recent updates this thing seems to have grown up kinda...

Nord Lead 2 is a beast. I've got one, and I'll never sell it.

I enjoying combining patches with the MIDI LFO's in Max4Live for heavily modulated strangeness and the FM on it sounds SO GOOD (try it with its HPF).

Yes please, that would be awesome!
Btw yesterday I used a Drum Rackwith External Instrument Devices to combine my Minilogue, Volca FM and midified Monotribe into a drum synth. Really cool sounds.

Did you ever settle on a synth? If so which one?
I am kinda curious about digital poly synths too these days.

I'd say look into nord although I know they were not on your list! The lead 4 has a lot of sound design capabilities. Out of those I'd go with the Virus or the Novation.

Depends what sounds you're looking for; Blofeld has more punch with faster attack transients and it's possibly better than the Virus on basses.
