Gear setup question

I am about to add two more pieces of gear to a setup containing a TB3 and an Analog 4.
Ultimately I am planning the following setup:

Analog Four
Avalon
Tempest
TB3
Sub 37

send FX:
Rat disto
BigSky
Timeline or similar

I need a compatible audio interface and some way of mixing. I've been looking at a MOTU 16, but was wondering if folks had a recommendation. I'd like some room to grow, so thinking of an 8 channel with something like 2-4 assignable send FX lines. Any recommendations or is this not feasible?

Re: Gear setup question

I was looking at a presonus 16.0.2 for a long time but the fact that it was firewire kind of turned me off. I got a motu 828 with thunderbolt and am very happy so far. Still kind of wish I had a mixer sometimes but meh for now. The 828 has adat I/O so lots of room to grow with other digital convertors, up to 26 channels which is great. I am actually looking to see if there are digital mixers with adat outs that I could use that way tbh edit: I have a boss re-20 delay pedal and its pretty awesome if you are looking for delay pedals that are actually affordable!

Re: Gear setup question

Interfaces with dedicated FX sends probably exist, but bet they are expensive. Sounds like you might want to add a mixer with sub mix channels/ouputs or ouputs for each channel. Or maybe a patch bay. Mixer is the simplest solution IMO

The 828 can be steup to use sends, I am looking into that, might get extra inputs to do that myself!

Re: Gear setup question

Nobody here rocking an all-in-one solution yet?
Sounds like you should possibly look at USB mixer/interfaces liquid_air.
Maybe have a look at something like the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
and go from there depending on your budget.

Also, don't overlook that if you want your stuff recorded in stereo via a regular mixer then you may need more channels that you initially thought.

Keep me posted, I am keen on this as a solution for me

As for @[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
the turn off for me as far as mixers go is that they all were FireWire and as far as Mac goes it is an obsolete connection and the reports of FireWire to tunderbolt connectors are all mixed seemingly.

Totally valid.
I don't have one either tbh, but I know a few people who do and think they're brilliant.

Re: Gear setup question

828's are great, although a friend did occasionally have issues with his dropping out when using it with his PC.

I'm just surprised more people don't buy an interface with a built-in mixer, seems like it makes sense and is a best-of-both-worlds solution.

I guess it's maybe overkill and overpriced for a lot of people. (including me)

I've actually been moving back in the box more and more myself and was thinking of selling the El Cap pedal, but if I can get this setup with little or no latency I might hold off. I still really love the sound of the El Cap and none of my plug ins sound quite like it even though it is DSP/digital.

Well I have been sending audio into the iPad with no latency issues so it should be good, the mpc and a few others tho already maxed out my inputs so no chance for me to try using sends from the cue mix yet.

No, I've never had latency issues sending audio just out, or just in. But sending it out and then back in with same interface might be another story all together.

Re: Gear setup question

Midas and Allen and Heath both make great mixers with Firewire built in. Super configurable as far as being pre or post fader for recording, all of the sends and returns act as IO as well.

Mackie's Onyx series is a little cheaper but less configurable.

In regards to the MOTU for FX sends, completely doable. In Ableton you can set up their External Effects insert device. It will be latent but there is compensation for it. If you search Ableton's site there is a tutorial for how to calculate how latent it is (hint: the tutorial is for the external instrument device but it'll work) I have my ADAT IO set up with my rack effects via a couple of Behringer ADA8000's. Works great.

Re: Gear setup question

I know, it's not what you're looking out for.
My setup:
Voice 1 mono(KICK) --> OT input A assigned to Track1 THRU machine(so 2 FX slots)
Voice 2 mono(BASS) --> OT input B assigned to Track5 THRU machine(so 2 FX slots)
Voice 3 mono(general use)--> EHX Memoryman
Voices 4,5,6--> MAIN OUT --> OT inputs CD
C assigned to Track2 THRU machine and Track3 NEIGHBOUR(so 4 FX slots) Pads, and general synth
D assigned to Track6 THRU machine and Track7 NEIGHBOUR(so 4 FX slots)hihat, snare

Setting up 4,5,6 on the main Out allows me to use panning on the tempest sounds for assigning those to the 2 different FX channels on the OT. ( so 3 Out's to 2 In's)
And since the OT inputs assigned to the to Thru machines are processed in stereo, you've got everthing in stereo.

I don't know the specs on the a4 inputs or FX section, this might be a routing possibility on the 2 A4 inputs.
Or, maybe an Octatrack.

Yeah, I've been looking at the Midas mixers, pricey, but seems to check all the boxes.

On a side note, any way that external gear can be used as an FX send for ITB signals?

Re: Gear setup question

Not sure for what daw you are using but in live there is a device called external effect that can be set on any channel for just that. Barring that just a question of setting the outputs and inputs, you might have to set up return busses or something tho, depends on how your daw works
