Why do you use hardware?

What is your story and how did you get to have a hardware setup despite the ease and accessibility of software?

For me it is a matter of personal experience and feeling; I come from a punk background but when I saw a groovebox I was blown away by the idea/promise/dream of an all-in-one machine. I was using some software back then (Fruity Loops 3/Hammerhead and similar) but hardware felt different.

Right now I got to the point that I do not get any inspiration from software and hardware fits more into my workflow based on short 10 minutes/half hour sessions.

Re: Why do you use hardware?

well I DON'T currently have a hardware setup, BUT

1. I enjoy having limitations to work within sometimes
2. Immediacy and/or tactile feel - this is why I loved my Ableton Push too. Just boot the fucker up and jam. The Push was a nice balance between the flexibility of software and the speed and simplicity of hardware.
3. Analogue gear in particular has that sound that's just often not worth the effort to try and emulate IMO. No MIDI stepping on these filter sweeps breh.

If cost allowed I'd gladly have a full hardware setup. Probably not gonna happen.

Re: Why do you use hardware?

I always wanted to have hundred machines, each device made just for one beeb or function and perform with a huge amount of almost unnecessary gear.

Now I can just make billion tracks without even editing, each drastically different.

Re: Why do you use hardware?

I have produced ITB for a while and last year I bought a Moog Minitaur and a Waldorf Blofeld. Although I do have controls on my midi keyboard (Akai MPK249) there is definitely something more immediate about manipulating sound with hardware. Also I know this is a bit of a contentious subject, but none of the plugins I have sounds as warm and fat as the Minitaur.

I'm still pretty inexperienced with hardware though. Looking to get the Korg SQ1 next to hook up to the Minitaur to give me more options jamming.

Very similar to your experience : heavy metal is what made me play guitar. I'm having tons of fun right now with my Microgranny (might pull of the trigger on a second one to chain them...), I need to find adapters to run the mg into a looper and a delay I have lying around because I know I feel like I'm doing music when messing with sound in that immediate way. I need limitations, and working on a laptop is the opposite of that. Also, I don't have the luxury of afternoons spent doing music so it's much easier to plug in a machine and start with a chord rather than booting up the laptop, launching a DAW, making sure the connections are ok, fixing the one problem which will happen before playing ... I need to dive in right away. Hardware does that for me.

Re: Why do you use hardware?

I'be always prefered the live setting, and hardware seems to lend itself to that. At least, being more interesting to watch. Coming from a guitar background as well, i'm very used to feeling what i'm playing. Hardware is a much more tactile experence. It also makes live improvisation a lot easier, and you don't have to tab through 5 vst's to mess with a filter sweep for a bit longer than your recorded material.

Re: Why do you use hardware?

I played the guitar for 20 years up to now, so I have a special relationship with hardware playing which goes further the simple thing of being warmer and immediate with respect to the software. For me, the hardware means creativity and the software means micro-editing on details.

They combine very well tho!

Usually, I like composing melodies and patterns using some MIDI hardware, so that I can later edit what I played. I rarely record audio directly, for it's not very editable despite the after FXs you can mount on it.
Personally, my music had the best improvements when I bought a Launchpad and a Launchcontrol. With drums, patterns and fx mapped onto that hardware I became very quick in composing electronica!

Re: Why do you use hardware?

Well I still thoroughly enjoy my push2 but it's true the immediacy of using it with my blofeld is different than using vstis. Having said that working with push as a super groove box using only native sounds and plugins is amazing too. At this point for me I want to work out a system where I can use the best of both! I am also really loving my MPC 1000.
So back to your question it's about different ways of doing things for me and learning the strengths and limitations of each piece

Re: Why do you use hardware?

A couple of reasons.

1. My PC sucks. One instance of Ableton 9 and Una Corda brings my PC to a grinding halt.
2. I understand hardware more.
3. I use a computer all day at work, and don't want to use one at home for fun.

Re: Why do you use hardware?

The short answer is that while I can make a more "complex" and more finely tuned song with a DAW, using hardware live allows me to maintain a spontaneity and energy I loose by the time the process is over in the DAW. This doesn't always mean doing completely live takes. But I want to maintain that live element.

Also I like to feel like I am playing an instrument. I am originally a guitarist and hand drum player. I want to play it and not just use a mouse and keyboard.
