His music has always been innovative from a sound design point of view. A very influential and loved figure in the UK breakbeat scene, which has largely wound down now, so he's less relevant. I love his music. I really doubt idmf needs a thread devoted to shit talking Tipper.
Yeah I didn't really agree with the comment in question when I saw it posted. Sure his catalog is hit and miss but his records Surrounded and The Broken Soul Jambouree carry enough emotional weight and epic sound design to carry him through any level of scrutiny in my opinion.
From a sound perspective, for the most part, his records, especially his string of albums in those years, are second to none. I'd include The Seamless Unspeakable Something in the list above but being as we're talking soul I left it out. Although there is a certain level of that present in that offering I'd consider that one more of a feat of sound design than anything else.
I guess he's always been associated to breakbeat/glitch hop in my mind and what it means is it's pretty straight-forward rhythm coupled with a focus on timbre, textures, careful sound design and that some of the movement is merely the sounds being torn apart.
Tipper is a mad cunt. Anyone who thinks his music is soulless hasn't been listening. How is this soulless and what is shit about the drum programming?
Yeah, maybe most of his music is dance floor music for gurners at 5AM. But have you ever dropped a Tipper track at 5AM? Dude, the crowd loses their shit. Especially if you're in the middle of a heaving techno set and then you drop some squelchy bullshit ridiculously programmed brainfuck courtesy of Dave... Then you can go wherever you want.
I don't know, maybe people who feel this way just don't get his music. But who cares, he's a total dude. I've met him a couple of times and he's been super down to earth - feet firmly planted on the ground. One time when he was touring here a couple of years ago he had a heart attack, went to hospital and had surgery and still didn't miss a gig.
How such a hard working, dedicated and influential person like Dave Tipper could not possess a soul is beyond me. If you listen to anything with a breakbeat from the last five years, there's a whole lot of that man's soul to be heard. It's not his fault if you're too much of a douche to hear it
