I've gotten a lot better than when I first started two weeks ago, but the basics are still kind of eluding me... Mainly one thing.
Playing the high-hat at a regular 1/4 or 1/8.
I can do it if my kicks and snares are falling on them quite easily, but as soon as i try to throw an offbeat kick in with my left hand... my right hand automatically does the same thing as my left hand. thus breaking the 1/4 or 1/8. I'm talking about when you throw the kick in right before the snare hits. That throws me completely off. Every. Single. Time.
I've literally tried for hours and for some reason, my brain just can't comprehend this. Any advice? Does it just come to you with more practice, because this is something that shouldn't even be that hard to do.
I used to have this problem with drums. Things like an offset hat or bass drum pattern were ridiculously hard for me to comprehend no matter how hard I tried. Reading some tablature was what solved it for me, and taking it very slowly. Focus on just that little chunk of a measure, do it over and over, gradually add in more and more. I know it isn't exactly the same but on a cognitive level, it is.
