Best way to rename large quantities of samples for organizing?

Title says all. One way in Ableton is to name them in session mode then save file/collect all and it will be in samples folder in project folder. But I have hundreds if not thousands of samples, so it's not as ideal having a thousand tracks in ableton, but maybe im just getting picky?

Batch processing in your audio editor.
Just set the prefix and it will number them for you.

If you just need file renaming, there's a nice freeware called Lupas Rename that still runs on Windows after all these years. Other than that, if you use Foobar2000 to audition sounds, you can delete or copy or move or rename them from within it.

I use a combination of Bulk Rename Utility and Foosbar (for auditioning, deleting etc). Foosbar's also great for wav to mp3 conversion/flac/bit rate etc. Loads of little plugins available.

I Use Rename-It! for windows also Tag&Rename is a good option for metadata insertion.

Re: Best way to rename large quantities of samples for organizing?

Today, I started to organise my sample library for the first time in 5 years. I feel that the right answer to OP's question would have been: Don't ever let it to get to that point, because it's going to suck no matter what.

Re: Best way to rename large quantities of samples for organizing?

Yeah, it does tend to suck, but it can be done.
I think the key is to not have too many samples at all.
I try to have a maximum of about 60 MB of samples after 7zipping.
Most of the time, I only use samples for drums, and everything else is VSTi's and effects.

Although, I do occasionally use field samples too. But those I tend to name right as I make them, and that's not hard.

The other thing is, I've realised that I can't tell the difference between 24-bit drum samples and downsampled to 16-bit drum samples (after processing and editing). So, thankfully, I just tend to use 16-bit eventually. It keeps the archive sizes smaller. And I don't go any higher than 48 kHz either.
