Favourite software/hardware solutions for pads?

For creating your own pads with, what is your favourite software or hardware solution?

I'm personally a big fan of some of the older wavetable softsynths out there for this such as Tone2 Gladiator2 (HCM is amazing for pads) & Omnisphere 1 with it's massive soundsource collection & enormous multi-stacking (Omni2 Upgrade is on my Shopping list once my Xmas bonus rolls in haha) as well as just using a good freebie sampler such as Grace to manipulate samples into pads & stack with. I haven't had that much of a play around on too much hardware but I've heard good things about the Waldorf Blofeld & the newer Virus Models being pretty damn good for pads as well.

Re: Favourite software/hardware solutions for pads?

A simple waveform and various guitar pedals. Just send the wave out, dump it into a fuzz, a chorus, nineteen reverbs, and then fuck around with the knobs while I record it.

Try a lowpassed square wave, moron.

Also, buy my God damn music, please.

Re: Favourite software/hardware solutions for pads?

Alchemy and Absynth...and actually Massive is quite good w all the modulation options, though usually requires some additional filtering to soften the edges.

I also liked the UltraNova quite a bit for pads. Performance macro knobs make recording evolving sounds easy. I have an Analog 4 at the moment and besides the lack of voices it presents itself as a good pad machine. I know there is a way to make it drone infinitely as well which presents another, different opportunity for live tweaking performance macro knobs. But Ive not really used it for any of this. Also the probability based parameter locks present cool options for an ever changing sound scape.

Re: Favourite software/hardware solutions for pads?

For hardware, the Roland D-50. For software, Reaktor synths. Off the top of my head, it's usually, Carbon, Titan and SubHarmonic, or even more usually, a layered combination of those and others.

Re: Favourite software/hardware solutions for pads?

Me personally when I'm creating pads, I like to layer. This way I get the character of many different synths. I also tend to have the whole frequency range covered to give it a very full sound. I pick one synth for the body of the sound and add other synths to create a wide spacious sound then bus them together with eq and compression.

My main go to synths are as follow

Access virus Ti
Omnisphere
Spire
Massive
Sylenth1

As I say some synths only might have a glassy fx playing the midi notes but adds character to the whole sound.

For pads I always turn to Omnisphere. When or if I choose hardware I turn to my Blofeld or Virus Snow.

Pretty tough to beat Omni as a one-stop solution. I tend to use DIVA a lot, often with a a layer of something less CPU hungry like Spire or HIVE.

Re: Favourite software/hardware solutions for pads?

to me the best pads came from 90s electronica and dnb.... so i would say any analogue or VA..... either a modulated set of stacked saw tooths pitch moded with square waves , or square waves PWM to fuck, or a bunch of detuned saws with PWM.... long attack, long release.... but that is just the sound... there is one reason and one reason only as to if pads are meh or really good and that is chord you use...

make no mistake, it is the fact that most people use a single held note for a pad that gives them a bad name, all about chording my friends CHORD CHORD CHORD

A lot of those pads came from romplers as well. And sometimes the sounds were straight up sampled from other records.

Re: Favourite software/hardware solutions for pads?

...actually i'm motivated by this thread to... use more pads ... and to check out the pad presets of DIVA. I struggeld if i should buy this synth, but actually i'm very happy with it... using it for bass sounds mainly so far...
